Everything recently using a lot of memory
Everything recently using a lot of memory
Hi, recently I've noticed that I've been consistently hearing my computer work intensely. Each time I look in task manager, Everything is at the top of the list using about 800MB of memory!
I've been using Everything for a few months now (about 4-5 months) and it hasn't been like this - only recently.
Another thing is that if I exit everything and restart it, it asks me for administrative rights - this might be normal, but I don't remember this.
Any help will be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
David

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
What version of Everything?
Are you using the Everything Service (presumably not)?
(Tools | Options | General -> Everything Service)
About how many files do you have?

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
I am using Everything Version 1.4.0.713b (x64) (Windows 10 Pro 64bit)
I was wondering about the Everything service thing - I dont know what it is but it has a black square box in it's checkbox
And an edit, Everything asks for permissions, not only when I exit and restart, but every time I open it (even if it is open in the background)
This for sure wasn't the behavior before this week!
One more thing, task manager details pane show 3 processes for Everything.
EDIT: I just restored default settings of Everything, restarted my machine... I am still getting the same behavior
Every time I open the app, I am asked for permission, and it is consistently eating 800MB of memory!
Thanks,
David

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
You are still running an old version of the Everything.
Please try uninstalling any old versions of Everything and re-installing Everything 1.4.0.713b.
The Everything 1.4 installer should completely replace the old version, but in this case something has not worked or you are trying to run Everything 1.4 in portable mode with Everything 1.3 still installed.
What is Everything's memory usage like now?

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
I don't have multiple versions of Everything - I don't think I ever did
But are you suggesting to just do an uninstall and reinstall of Everything?
My current version of Everything is not portable but rather a full installation.
Please let me know
Thanks,
David

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
I uninstalled my Everything, and downloaded again the latest version, reinstalled it...
I am still getting the same results!
Anyone have any suggestions? This definitely wasn't like this previously...

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
Oh, just guessing...
Only the expected number of "everything" running?
One Process & one service?
Anything new on your end, perhaps antivirus or malware related?
Check to see if something like that has stuck its nose into the Everything process space?
When you uninstall/reinstall, are setting reset to defaults?
If not, perhaps close Everything (fully), then rename Everything.ini to Everything.ini.NOT, then start Everything & see if that makes a difference.

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
There should be only 2 processes, one for the service (if you have it installed) and one for the client.
Please check your Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + ESC), check the Everything.exe file locations, check which programs run on startup from start->run->msconfig

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
Hi guys, thanks for your responses
Ok, thanks to you I figured out that there was another everything.exe running. I have an app called Wox which uses everything to search files - it has its own version.
I disabled that, and now there are only 2 processes as you described.
So, that is fixed, and also I think the re-install fixed the problem of asking for permission each time that app is opened.
However, this did not fix the problem. Everything is still using 800MB consistently!
After reinstalling, the bottom of the Everything window should that it was indexing, and then it finished and it currently doesnt show that it is indexing, so what could it be
There is only one more variable here, recently I realized that Windows search indexer is using 15% CPU (no memory, just CPU - opposite of Everything)
Can these 2 things be connected in anyway?
Thanks,
David

Are any results shown? However, this did not fix the problem. Everything is still using 800MB consistently!

If so, how many files and folders does Everything find when the search is empty?

Yes, there are resultsvoid wrote:Are any results shown?

It is showing 11,524,360 files
Just to mention, there is another possible variable although I dont think it's connected
I recent;y started using window's file history which backs up my files to an external hard drive
Thanks,
David
Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
800MB for 11,524,360 files is expected for Everything 1.4.
Try removing unnecessary volumes from the index from Tools -> Options -> Folders and Tools -> Options -> NTFS.
Try excluding unnecessary files/folders from Tools -> Options -> Exclude.
To reduce the memory used by Everything 1.4, please disable extra file information that is indexed by default:
In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
If you are using the x64 version of Everything consider using the x86 version as it will use about half the memory.

Unless its backing up millions of files, it shouldn't effect Everything much.Just to mention, there is another possible variable although I dont think it's connected

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
Wow! Ok, thank you
At least now I know this s normal!
But why should it consistently use that much even when it is not doing anything?
I think maybe what happened was file history's drive was also indexed, increasing the amount of files tremendously
I just unchecked that drive from the "include in database" option and it re-evaluated to 1,395,444 files! (I have no clue how that drive added 10 million files.... but that's what it seems like)
Now, Everything is only using 80MB!
Thanks,
David

Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
Everything keeps its entire database in memory for quick access. So when you perform a search or rename a folder the results are instant. But why should it consistently use that much even when it is not doing anything?
Re: Everything recently using a lot of memory
Instant is awesome!
Got it - thanks so much!!!
