I was experimenting with the new "dupe-from" function and got a results list of thousands of files with many different extensions. The preview pane was displayed.
Later I noticed a taskbar icon showing that there were many windows spawned with the title "pick an app", as shown here:
Each one of these "pick an app" windows prompted to select an app to view a file with a certain extension, as follows:
Then for some reason the taskbar button and all of the "pick an app" windows simply disappeared. I can't think of anything I did to make that happen.
I'm guessing that these windows were spawned because of the files with different extensions listed in the Everything results list. It seems that there was an attempt to open at least some of the listed files, and Windows needed to know which app to use to open each file. I don't remember double-clicking or doing something to initiate a File Open operation. I tried highlighting multiple files in the results list and then manually initiating a File Open, but even in this case, only a single "Pick an App" window was spawned. So maybe the spawning of multiple "pick an app" windows was something not done by me, but somehow generated by Everything? Perhaps it's not a big problem since the taskbar button and spawned windows went away, but I thought you might want to know.
1385a (x64) - many "pick an app" windows spawned
Re: 1385a (x64) - many "pick an app" windows spawned
Maybe it was triggered by a preview handler?
Please try searching for an ocx file, selecting one with the preview pane opened and see if the issue persists.

Re: 1385a (x64) - many "pick an app" windows spawned
Bottom line - I can't find an explanation of what happened earlier, and I haven't been able to reproduce it. I'll let you know if it happens again. More info below.
When it happened, these "pick an app" windows popped up for .ocx and .dll files, maybe others, but definitely those two. And there were quite a few of them, maybe 10-20.
I just discovered that if I double-tap on the preview pane with one of those files selected, the "pick an app" window will pop up. So that triggers a "file open" operation. So maybe without knowing it I did a bunch of double-taps with different files, or a double-tap with a bunch of files selected, and that triggered all the "pick an app" windows?
But experimenting just now, when I click on another Everything window (other than the one that triggered the pick an app window) - the pick an app window simply disappears, without any need to close it manually or press Esc.
Also I haven't been able to trigger multiple "pick an app" windows at once - it's triggered only for the focused file even if others are also selected.
Even when I try to get multiple "pick an app" windows to pop up at the same time, with their own taskbar button, I haven't been able to make that happen.

Re: 1385a (x64) - many "pick an app" windows spawned
But only one (at least in Win7) "pick an app" (or in the case of Win7, a, "Caution" dialog [with a .ocx/.dll]).I just discovered that if I double-tap on the preview pane with one of those files selected, the "pick an app" window will pop up.
(And I'll assume it was the last file "clicked", if more then one were selected.)
Have you made changes to the defaults in:
Tools | Options | General -> Context Menu
& in the Open items in particular?
Re: 1385a (x64) - many "pick an app" windows spawned
Yes, when I try to open multiple "pick an app" windows intentionally, I can only open one, for the most recently focused file. It's kind of odd that I don't have to close it manually by clicking a Cancel button or something like that. Maybe that's a new Windows 11 thing. My past experience has been is that popup windows like that don't just go away on their own, but this one does - if I click on some other window.
I looked at Tools > Options > General > Context Menu. The command for "Open (files)" is set to $exec("%1") - which I'm guessing is the default.
I'm guessing it was some kind of temporary aberration. Luckily it hasn't happened again, and not a major problem anyway.
