Bookmarks v Filters / Merging

Post by meteorquake »

A general question - is there any vision or concept entertained (even if distant) of merging Bookmarks and Filters together into a single thing?
I'll explain the logic. Filters create an invisible background to your searches, so for example if they indicate "Folders under folder X", all searching will be within that. But on selecting a filter, you may actually want an action to be taken or the search box to be prefilled with something so that it's easy to adjust. For example the filter may be for folder X, but the "folders only" bit could be a string that on selecting the filter is applied to the search edit box (added or replacing it) so that the user can delete it when wished. In this respect in Filters an extra box for a search string modifier to apply immediate actions on selecting the Filter or "apply bookmark on choosing filter" would achieve this.
Bookmarks are the converse - they carry out an immediate action that is not a background, but, they in turn do allow selecting the background by allowing you to also set a Filter.
In this respect, they are almost already converged on the same thing, and all you need is a unified concept which on selecting provides a backdrop element (like filters) AND also can perform an immediate action. They can therefore appear on the existing two droplists according to whether they have a backdrop element (appearing on the Filter list) or an immediate action element (appearing on the Bookmark list), so could appear on both if both elements are present, but you could anyway just call these "List 1" and "List 2" (which the user could maybe name) and have in these unified items (that replace bookmarks and filters by combining their features) two tickboxes "Appear on List 1" and "Appear on List 2" so you can use those lists for whatever purposes you wish, whilst the folderised naming system already present would allow them to be all presented as a single list and the user compartmentalises them as they wish.

I will consider a UI feature to active bookmarks and open filters.
Thank you for the suggestion.

For now, macros can be used to reference multiple filters and bookmarks in your search.
