Can I avoid killing the Everything Service every time I...?

Post by spooky »

I use the portable version of Everything 1.5, and since I'm a nerd for this software I like to download every new alpha version released, even if it's 3 or 4 per month. The thing is, every time I want to replace the old .exe file with the newest one, a Windows' dialog tells me that everything is running in the background, I have to then open to the Task Manager and kill the everything background service to continue. Another occasion where I have to kill the service is when I have to remove a pendrive because Everything is indexing the whole thing (and I love this feature I don't want to deactivate it), I don't mind closing the program for Windows to let me remove the pendrive safely, but going to the Task Manager and doing the whole 'End Task' again gets a little tedious. Is there a way to avoid this Task Manager procedure? I know I can run it as an administrator instead of installing the service the first time I run the .exe but that's not an option due to a particular situation with my computer that is not relevant here.

To stop the Everything Service on exit:
  • Exit Everything (File -> Exit)
  • Open your Everything-1.5a.ini in the same location as your Everything64.exe
  • Change the following line:
    stop_service_on_exit=0
    to:
    stop_service_on_exit=1
  • Save changes and restart Everything.
Everything will now stop the Everything Service on exit.
The Service is restarted when you restart Everything.

I have to kill the service is when I have to remove a pendrive because Everything is indexing the whole thing
Explain that?
Everything is indexing Properties on the drive - which may be timely, depending.
And you're wanting to remove the drive, yet this indexing (of Properties) is still ongoing?

If not something like that, then... ?

To my knowledge, the service is not indexing anything.
The client is doing the index.
So if you stop the client, there should be no blocking of ejecting a drive.
