Everything not starting at Win 10 startup

Post by Hans L »

Everything is not starting at Win 10 startup today, and when I start it manually, it shows up in the Notification area (which it should) and then disappears when I click on its icon.

If I try to click in Everything's menu, nothing happens.

I have the latest Everything version, and I have Win 10 Home x64, v 22H2, OS build 190452728.

Any idea what might have happened?

Latest Everything doesn't say if you are using the 1.4 or 1.5 version ?

What is your setup ?
Suggested is installing the service and not running as Administrator.

Any info in Windows error log or the Event viewer ?

(If I had to guess, I'd think that your antivirus is interfering?)

Another thought... perhaps the .exe has become corrupted?

Download the ZIP version (same version & bitness as you are using), unpack Everything.exe from the ZIP & compare that against the installed .exe in /program files/.

(You could compare the hash of each.
A basic program, HashMyFiles.)

Downloading and using the zip version worked. I uninstalled Everything and tried the install version first, and it gave me the same problems that I got today.

So, back in business.

Thanks for leading me towards the zip version. (I used UltraCompare first, and it showed tons of differences in the exe file in the install version and in the zip version.)

Assuming same version, same bitness, they should have been identical.
(The .exe's are identical between the installer & the respective zip.)

I am sure they are the same, but one worked for me, one did not. Not good to hear, I am sure, but so it is. Hope no one else will have problems.

Used zip version to copy Everything.exe and Everything.lng to C;/Program Files>Everything.

Everything still not opening up at startup, but when I open it manually, it stays in the Notification area when I close it.

However, when I open Everything, it takes 30 seconds before all files & folders open up. Is it creating the database every time or ...? I see no file Everything.db, which I think I had earlier.

Please give me a hint as to what to do and/or where to look for what to set and how when not having used the installer (which does not work for me at all now).

Thanks,

Puting the Zip version into C:\Program Files\Everything
is a bad idea as this dir is not writeable without admin rights.
Put it into some path like c:\tools\Everything
or check that the setting "Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything"
under Tools / General is enabled.
A database is only written when you exit Everything.

Horst, it seems to work better now after move from Program Files. I'll see later if it opens up at startup.

Thanks,

I have two external SSDs (each a drive), but only one of them shows up in the Everything Options > Indexes > NTFS > Local NTFS volumes (K shows, not L). Any idea why? I have looked everywhere (I believe) and find no way to add L (I tried Folder, added L, but no cigar).

First guess, drive L: is not NTFS formated
