Loss of thumbnails

Post by Stuart444 »

I've been using Everything for some years, it's an excellent tool. I'm presently using Version 1.4.1.999 (x64) on Windows 10.

Previously, it showed thumbnails with no problems. I particularly use it for searching for .jpg, camera RAW (.orf and .CR3) and .afphoto files. Everything showed me thumbnails for all of these previously.

Some months ago I noticed that not all files were displaying thumbnails, particularly the afphoto ones (these are photograph files created by Serif's photo editor Affinity Photo). Now I find that NO thumbnails are shown for ANY file, just icons.

I've tried to follow other threads here and have tried setting up as they suggest. I've uninstalled and re-installed Everything. I've rebooted the computer. Same result!

Please help me get my thumbnails back! It would be a pain to go back to pre-Everything days.

Thanks

First guess, your Thumbnail software in Windows is misconfigured or has problems.
Do you still have succesfull thumbnail views in Explorer ?

Just a shot in the dark...Have you tried clearing and rebuilding the thumbnail cache in Windows?

That's interesting, because no, Windows Explorer is not showing me thumbnails any more. I rarely use it, and for browsing images I use XnViewMP, and Olympus Workspace, and Canon Digital Phot Prof 4, Fastone image Viewer and DigiCam - all five of these show thumbnails OK as normal.

Possibly, show thumbnails has been disabled in Windows settings? I think this would hide them in explorer but not in the programmes.
There is a setting 'always show icons, never thumbnails'

Your shot in the dark was brilliantly aimed, Harry, as that has fixed it. It's not something I've done before, and I followed the instructions here https://www.windowscentral.com/how-rese ... windows-10. The delete thumbnails step didn't seem to work properly as the progress bar went across to the right then stopped, and even after several repeats and deletion of other files eg temporary internet files, Windows Explorer said these areas were not empty. However I followed the remaining instructions, and perhaps tellingly, in the final section "Bonus tip", I did find the box "Always show icons, never thumbnails" was ticked. After unticking it and finally Apply, OK, I found thumbnails being built in Windows Explorer and Everything again.Woohoo! Excellent.

Thanks very much for your help.

I wasn't aware that disabling thumbnails in Windows Explorer would affect Everything's ability to display them too. Huh. Is that intentional?

Everything will use the 'icons only' system setting by default.
