Just curious: Were the file properties set after you compiled it yourself?
QuickSwitch
Re: QuickSwitch
As this part is new too, I was curious if that would work outside of my setup. Glad it does.
So: Thanks for testing again!

Re: QuickSwitch
And that is only the tip of the iceberg ...
I wasn't kidding when I said that QuickSwitch would not exist without @tuska.
For the previous version we exchanged a lot of ideas and testresults (all behind the scenes). That took a lot of time.
I almost gave up a couple of times, but he kept me on track. And now we have QuickSwitch ...
But it wasn't just @tuska ...
(something I wanted to say for a long time and this seems like a good moment)
The *entire* Everything 'community' is full of friendly, helpful people. Good people that help with solutions, suggestions, trying, testing or simply encouragement (and will let you know when something is a bad idea). Not just in this case, but in general.
That is quite exceptional when compared to the average forum. And I love it!
Re: QuickSwitch
I really like Quickswitch, providing me more flexibility in Open/Save dialogs.
The only thing that I would stil wish for is a "dark mode" coloring style for the dialog. Is this something that is easy to achieve?

Re: QuickSwitch
Yes, that should be easy.
The current colour was chosen because it would be clearly visible in dark mode as well as light mode.
Tbh, I didn't give it much thought beyond that, because you would only see it for 1 or 2 seconds.
If i bothers you a lot, i can write a custom version or provide instructions on how to change it yourself.
in a future version there will be an entirely different menu. I will add a dark- as well as a light version to that (probably chosen based on your Windows settings)

Re: QuickSwitch
In my opinion that would be the smartest version. Background color depending on Windows setting. Another possibility is to offer a background color setting.
PS: I did not try QuickSwitch yet - so just a general remark.
Re: QuickSwitch
No great bother, but it still attracts my attention. Would be nice to have a go at it myself, so some directions where to make changes would be awesome. I think I can handle compiling myself, I dabble with some development at times.
Re: QuickSwitch
Please don't make it only dependend on the Windows setting.
I don't run Windows in dark mode but many tools with their own dark mode functions.
Re: QuickSwitch
Here you go ...
Menu in the attached version will use the same dark/light scheme as Windows. Requires Win10 at least (Win8 might work too)
Briefly tested ...
In the "old" menu, only changing the backgroud colour would be simple. But as the fontcolour needs to change to, it got a bit more complicated, so no DIY solution this time. Sorry ..
(You forced me to test the Windows light theme ... it was like coming out of a bar at 8 AM ... You owe me one! )

Re: QuickSwitch
A setting to choose between dark/light/follow Windows then?
FYI: New version will take a while, so a lot of time to think about refinements.
BTW: there are 2 registry settings relevant here under HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize:
SystemUsesLightTheme and AppsUseLightTheme. Do you have AppsUseLightTheme=0 (for dark apps)?
That could be a trigger too .. (trying to keep things as simple as possible)
Re: QuickSwitch
Thanks a ton!
Well, seems to work fine here. And I know now how to create executables from AHK scripts. I even added some "white Q on black background" icon, so it looks nicely in the tray. I'll continue testing it the coming days.
I can definitively live with this
Being a fellow countryman, I'd offer you a beer when we meet.... to bring upon you the horror of the light theme should be redeemed in a fitting way!
Re: QuickSwitch
Thank you for the continuous work!
I now realized that I did not have the notifications activated for this thread. Should be ok from now on.
"Bad" news from me: v0.5 (self-compiled with icon) does not work with Dopus.
See image for error-message. If you should need more/other info, please let me know.

Re: QuickSwitch
BTW, it would be nice, if the compiled exe would also have a "reload that script" tray menu item.
Because the script does not work anymore after the above error, until I exit and restart.
Because the script does not work anymore after the above error, until I exit and restart.
Re: QuickSwitch
That makes no sense for me.
For the compiled one there isn't any script which may have changed in the background.
Compiling and replacing the exe while it is running also isn't a good idea.
Re: QuickSwitch
I assume you don't understand.
I mean, adding lines like these to the code:
Code: Select all
Menu, Tray, Add, Reload, _Reload
_Reload()
{
Reload
}
Anyway, it's not a big deal. I can always add the lines myself. I am just so glad, that this tool exists! Thanx again, NotNull!!
Re: QuickSwitch
Thank you for taking the time to test Dopus/QuickSwitch, @autocart!
Based on the error message, it looks like the %dopus_exe% variable was not set.
Will look at it tonight (European timezone), but in the meantime:
- Does the pre-compiled version behave the same? (Not that I doubt your compiling skills ... just to exclude causes)
- Does dopusrt.exe exist in the same folder as dopus.exe?
Regarding the Reload option, that will be part of the systray menu at some point:

Thanks for the suggestion!QuickSwitch is not finished yet.
On the To-Do list for the near future are:
- Support for long paths ( longer than 259 characters)
- A better user interface. There will be a simplified menu with less 'technical' entries.
Suggestions are welcome.- A different way to 'talk with' Total Commander an XYplorer
- A notification area (/system tray) menu, including icon
- Option to load at startup

If you had said adding some code to get a reload
I would have understand it from the beginning
Nevertheless a good idea.
Re: QuickSwitch
You are extremely welcome. Thank YOU for wanting to continue developing that tool.
In general, yes, but the error message looks a bit different because of the uncompiled ahk code, I assume:
Yes.
That will be nice. But again, in realitly it is no problem to add it on oneself.
Re: QuickSwitch
I found a solution:
I added the four lines that I marked with ";<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<" on their right to this function:
No idea, why your original function won't work with the Dopus process, since it works fine with the XY process (and obviously also with TC?).
However, the AHK built-in command seems to work ok.
I added the four lines that I marked with ";<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<" on their right to this function:
Code: Select all

return
name_size = 255
VarSetCapacity( name, name_size )

However, the AHK built-in command seems to work ok.
Re: QuickSwitch
One more thing, though:
I mostly am running onyl XY with one pane hidden.
Over and over again, it happens sometimes, that QS only shows the path from the hidden XY pane.
If that happens I have to trigger it once or twice more until it shows the paths from both panes.
Not sure, though, what the exact circumstances are of when this happens or even whether there are traceable/noticeable repeating circumstances.
This is not a big deal atm or in any way urgent, I am primarily wondering why or if it was easy to fix this.
On the long run (weeks, months) it probably would get annoying.

Re: QuickSwitch
If you need a sparing partner as to how to talk to XY in a "better" way than via the clipboard ... maybe I can help a bit.
You already found out that you can send XY a message. Well, probably you already know that, but in the same way you can make XY send a message back to your script. Probably you are just trying to find the time for implementing it ... all the best with that.
Re: QuickSwitch
Re: QuickSwitch
Aren't we all like that ...
One simple suggestion:
In the "Settings for this dialog" section, I would call the "Not now" option differently, namely something like "Ask for manual switch (Default)" in comparision to "Allow AutoSwitch".
And since I am already thinking about it:
If I understood the tool correctly, it would be more correct / understandable if "Settings for this dialog" was called "Settings for this application"?
Then, it might also be a good idea to allow changing the default behavior of the tool as a whole to autoswitch.
Also, in case of autswitching, I know that other similar tools autoswitch to the location of the last active file manager, regardless of how many windows it is "away". Then it would not just make the autoswitch exception unnecessary, it would also help in cases when I alt-tab from the file manager to the dialog and accidently select a different application first. As of now, in such a case I have to alt-tab back to the file manager again before proceeding - with caution - to the file dialog. Or is this a copyright / trademark thing?
And finally (but only for this post), also in case of autoswitching, when the tool switches immediately upon opening a file dialog and I realize that the location suggested by the application itself would have been fine/better, is there a way to undo the autoswitch and go back to the originally displayed location? Not a big need for that atm - I like the manual switching better anyway -, but I just thought that someone might have a need for it sometimes.
Re: QuickSwitch
With your modification it still works fine in TC and XY.autocart wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 1:38 pm I found a solution:

Re: QuickSwitch
2autocart
My opinion on the subject of "AutoSwitch" is as follows:
Ideally, one does not need the "QuickSwitch Menu" and the correct path is automatically shown in the open/save dialogue -> A.
But this cannot always be achieved automatically.
Only in this case the "QuickSwitch Menu" with Ctrl-Q is required, and in this menu all accessible paths,
both from Windows Explorer and the file manager, are displayed and can be selected with a click.
Have you seen my tests?
and I personally see no reason to change this designation. But it's up to NotNull.

- A = The first time the dialogue is called up (open/save), the correct path from file manager or File Explorer is already displayed!
- B = When the dialogue is called up for the first time (open/save), the path of file manager or File Explorer is NOT automatically displayed,
although the menu item "Allow AutoSwitch" has already been selected in the "QuickSwitch Menu"! - AB = The result was A once and B the other time.
- Q = The path in the dialogue can only be selected via Ctrl-Q
- teilw = partial; A teilw = usually the path is automatically available, but sometimes the menu must be used to call up the desired path.

Re: QuickSwitch
@tuska
Thx for your reply. Unfortunately, I am not sure what you are trying to tell me.
@NotNull
Besides all the above mentioned suggestions, I now have one more:
The Situation:
I just found myself in the situation that I opened a file dialog and the paths from XY did not include the location that I wanted.
The Suggestion:
Would it not be nice, if the QS dialog would include an item that - by clicking it - would bring the file manager of one's choice to the foreground? Then I could navigate to the target folder in my familiar environment (in that file manager) and then alt-tab back to the file dialog. QS could then automatically switch to that location in the file dialog.
The item could be called something like "Fetch location from [TC|XY|WE|DO]" depending on which file manager one wants. Maybe it would be best to define only one favorite file manager as the one to fetch locations from in this way, if that feature was a good idea anyway?

Re: QuickSwitch
You guys have been busy ...
So I'll replace the original to the one you posted for the next version.
(I use processpath in other places too. Without issues, so should be stable)
EDIT: Missed @horst's reply .. Extra certainty that this is the right way. Thanks!
I 'suspect' that using this alternative method might help with this annoying issue too.
You can have the Notepad=>Open dialog trigger a different response than Notepad=>Save or Excel=>Open.
So technically it should say something like "Settings for this specific dialog"
I miss a setting for a menu-default too (choose between Never, Show Menu and AutoSwitch). But that requires a GUI to make that setting. GUI's are a lot of work (never realized that before I wrote my first (simple) GUI; I now respect @void even more!)
Writing a nice GUI for QuickSwitch will take some time. In the meantime: would an INI-entry to configure a default action help?
BTW: Instead of using 'ALT + TAB' multiple times, you can also:
Windows itself provides some methods for that:
- press 'ALT + cursor left'
- Should the original dialog path be added to the folder list? (not in my opinion, btw)

Thank you all !
Nice, well done! Very strange that the original function did not return the path...autocart wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 1:38 pm I found a solution:Code: Select all
WinGet, name, ProcessPath , ahk_pid %p_pid%
So I'll replace the original to the one you posted for the next version.
(I use processpath in other places too. Without issues, so should be stable)
EDIT: Missed @horst's reply .. Extra certainty that this is the right way. Thanks!
I did play around with it, based on some suggestions from user highend on the XYplorer forums (link). But all suggestions are welcome!
I 'suspect' that using this alternative method might help with this annoying issue too.
It is both. It is the application-dialog combination.
You can have the Notepad=>Open dialog trigger a different response than Notepad=>Save or Excel=>Open.
So technically it should say something like "Settings for this specific dialog"
I don't like this 'Not now' either. It is the "Show Menu" option, but as that is (currently) already the default, that would leave the menu without a visible clue to exit the dialog.
Definitely not a copyright thing This was by far the easiest method to implement "quickswitching".
BTW: Instead of using 'ALT + TAB' multiple times, you can also:
- Press down the ALT key; press TAB multiple times until you reach the right program; release the TAB key
- Click on the icons in the taskbar (assuming the taskbar is visible)
- Use 'WIN + TAB' and use the cursor keys to select
Good question! Will add the following to the 'documentation'
Windows itself provides some methods for that:
- press 'ALT + cursor left'
- Should the original dialog path be added to the folder list? (not in my opinion, btw)
I like that idea! Brainstorming: I would make cursor right on a [TC|XY|WE|DO] folder open the matching file manager. For GUI use, a[>] button per folder entry. Or SHIFT-clicking a folder, or ...autocart wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 7:02 pm The Suggestion:

On the one hand, I wanted to express that it is not possible to achieve the main goal of QuickSwitch "AutoSwitch" in all cases.
On the other hand, I wanted to point out the test results again to show that the tool can be used very well in daily use.
For me, this means that there is no need to extend this tool with all kinds of additional functions.
But I don't want to be a fun brake, because the author, NotNull, seems to be very motivated, to implement all possible suggestions.
Re: QuickSwitch
That must be a misunderstanding. My 'philosophy' for almost all applications is "less is more". The less features, the better. And the features that remain should be out of the (visual) way, but easily accessible.
On the other hand: Suggestions that strengthen the core or prevent problems should always be implemented (if cost < benefit)
In this phase I'm open to all user experience /user interface ideas. The ideas that will be implemented in the end must be logical, natural and "organic" at least.
Example:
I recently took a look at QuickAccessPopup (QAP) and I understand why many people use it (a lot of different options, leading to a lot of different folders to choose from), but it comes down to browsing through the QAP menu-folder structure vs browsing the filesystem. Same difference (for me as a QAP outsider).
Not natural and organic enough for me as I can almost feel my brain switching to a different mode when using QAP. And switch back afterwards.
One of the QAP menu options was for TC's Directory Hotlist (IIRC). That list gets extracted from TC, saved in QAP's database and presented in a submenu.
I think for TC users, it can be useful to have access to the Directory Hotlist (or similar in other filemanagers).
So the following is an organic workflow in my opinion:
Put cursor on a TC folder in QuickSwitch folderlist; press 'cursor right' (TC will be brought to the front); select folder from Directory Hotlist; go back to dialog to switch to the selected folder.
I think this is much more natural as you are extremely familiar with Total Commander and selecting a folder there is a muscle memory automatism. (not to me, but you get the point )
It might be 1 or 2 clicks more "work", but feels faster and easier because you stay in the "flow".
EDIT:
To be clear: it isn't even certain if this gets implemented in the end. Just trying diffeent approaches and see what works well. The discarded ideas end up in the recycle bin, but help in getting more experience.
Re: QuickSwitch
To be honest:
Theoretically yes, in practice for me only "nice to have" and in reality I do not need such a function in QuickSwitch
=> Directory Hotlist (Ctrl+D) in Total Commander (TC) <=.
My "centre" is the file manager.
If I store files (open/save), I have several options in the file manager and Everything to quickly set the corresponding paths
beforehand in the file manager.
[If I have forgotten to set the paths beforehand or first have to search for them with Everything, then I just press
ALT+TAB...]
Presumably, however, there could be other Total Commander users who see things differently.
Re: QuickSwitch
For me QuickSwitch already follows changes in my file manager.
It starts to display the pathes from TC or XY.
If I now click on the taskbar icon of the file manager and change some path there
the QuickSwitch display in the Open/Save dialog automatically changes to the new pathes.
So no need for any enhancement from my side.
QuickSwitch provides here the same convenient function as Listary.

Re: QuickSwitch
Hello all,
I just found this awesome thread.
Bear with me if I haven't read everything yet. Like many others, I've been looking for a replacement for Listary for a long time. I'm also a heavy Dopus and Everything user.
In my case, there is a minor peculiarity in that I use Word 2003 all day long every day for text production. The Open/Save dialogs of Word 2003 are still supported by Listary v.5, but not anymore by Listary v.6.
It seems that Quickswitch as well as JumpToFolder also don't support Word 2003's Open/Save dialogs:
Would that be very difficult to implement?
Not sure if this helps, but here is a screenshot from AutoHotkey's Windows Spy, next to a Word 2003 Open dialog:

Re: QuickSwitch
It looks like it can be done, but there is only one way to find out ...
That definitely helps! This dialog uses a different class (bosa_sdm_...) instead of the expected #32770 classNot sure if this helps, but here is a screenshot from AutoHotkey's Windows Spy, next to a Word 2003 Open dialog:
QuickSwitch has a "Debug this dialog" function that would give me most/all information needed to analyze this type of dialog. But as your dialog class isn't supported (yet) ...
Will send you a separate dialog-debug tool that can analyze these Office 2003 dialogs.
Will send you a PM as that process and those details are not very interesting for other forum visitors.
PS: Office 2003? Let me guess: you don't like the ribbon?
Re: QuickSwitch
Awesome, thanks in advance!
I hated it at first, and let's be honest, it was hateable for quite some time. In the meantime however, I think it's pretty mature, and both usable and space-saving if you want it to be.
I even quite like using Office 365, especially the collaboration and SharePoint features. Also, while I fortunately never have to give slide presentations, I nevertheless consider PowerPoint to be the best and fastest power user vector graphics program ever, and use it about 5h a day for that purpose
However, for serious bulk production of text (I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking), any Word version after 2003 is too sluggish for me. I also have customized Word 2003 ad nauseam with tons of special macros and functions that save me hours every day.
Sometimes, this can look like so:
Sorry for this digression from the thread topic!

As anyone else been able to execute the script with Task Scheduler? For some reason this script wont execute, I have other script that does opens so is not a problem with how I'm launching the script though I tried pointing directly to the ahk file and pointing to autohotkey.exe and adding the script path as argument.
Can someone please try to add the script to task scheduler and then try to run the task?

That doesn't make sense for me.
To start any AHK script with the task scheduler
just compile it and you have an exe file which can be handled as any other tool.
Re: QuickSwitch
Hi guys,
I am glad that I found this very helpful program, thanks a lot for developing and maintenance to everybody who is involved!
I've made some changes and extensions for my requirements, and would like to make this available to anyone who may need it.
What is the most appropriate way to do this? Upload the code right here, or creating a pull request on GitHub, or sending it to the author...?

Re: QuickSwitch
I've made other script start at logon without compiling it without any problems, as a matter of fact I was able to do that with this script too but I had to do something else.
The reason why it wasn't working (well, executing the task) was that I was enclosing the path with quotes, it seems if you enter a quoted path Windows opens the file with "Open with" (try it with any file, Windows will ask you which program you want to use), so I had to move the script to a path without spaces and now it works.
Program: C:\Scripts\QuickSwitch-main\QuickSwitch.ahk
Argument:
Start in: C:\Scripts\QuickSwitch-main
Another way was executing AutoHotkey and passing the file as argument, it wasn't working before because "Start in" has to be quote free always.
Program: "C:\Program Files\AutoHotkey\AutoHotkey.exe"
Argument:"C:\Scripts\QuickSwitch-main\QuickSwitch.ahk"
Start in: C:\Scripts\QuickSwitch-main
Sorry if this is offtopic as in the end it wasn't the script's fault but Windows'.

You can either post it here or send me a PM or post a link to your own GitHub.
(Please do not create a pull request as that would force me to figure out how git actually works...)
Re: QuickSwitch
Saved my day
What I've done so far:
- Added new types of file dialogs
(e.g. needed for some Autodesk products)
- Top 5 MRU folders added to file managers folders
(that's why I had to shrink icons to 16x16 )
- Added option to always show folder list
(useful if you often switch between the same folders)
- If JumpToFolder is found, an entry to the folder list is added
(or you can run it with Ctrl+J from the file dialog)

I compiled and tested it a little bit using Total Commander and XYplorer.
The only thing I had to change was the logic to find JumpToFolder.
I always use compiled scripts and also I had to add an icon for it in its dir.
What I never would do is to hide the icon of QuickSwitch by default
as this will confuse a lot of users.
