Updating Everything portable

Post by noisywan »

Hi, previously I installed portable version of Everything.
Now I need to update.

Q1: How should I do that without overwriting my options/settings?

Q2: If check the option `store data on regisrty`, will this protect my settings?

Q3: Should I unzip the updated files over the old ones, or delete the old folder completely before unzipping the new files?

Q4: If I dump the portable version and install the new version using the installer, will it overwrite my settings saved in registry?

Everything will store your settings in one of the following folders:
  • The same location as your Everything.exe
  • %APPDATA%\Everything
The location is determined by the Tools -> Options -> General -> Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything setting.
This setting is off by default for the portable version.

No settings are stored in the registry.

Before you do anything, please backup the following two folders:
The location of your Everything.exe (eg: C:\PortableApps\Everything )
%APPDATA%\Everything (if it exists)

If you would like to install Everything over the portable version, keeping your settings:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Click OK.
--- your settings are now stored in %APPDATA%\Everything ---
  • Run the installer.
  • Please make sure the following options are enabled when installing:
    • Install Everything Service.
    • Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
The installer will not overwrite or clear your existing settings.

If you would like to update with the portable version:
  • Completely exit Everything (right click the Everything system tray icon and click Exit).
  • From the Start menu, type in:
    services.msc
  • Right click Services and click Run as administrator.
  • Right click Everything and click Stop Service.
  • Overwrite your existing Everything.exe with the latest portable version.
  • In Services, Right click Everything and click Start Service.
  • Run Everything.exe

I find it much easier to use Everything for this:
1. Start Everything
2. Uncheck Everything Service under Tools / Options / General
3. Exit Everything from the File menu.
4. Now update the Everything64.exe in the portable dir
5. Start Everything and let it install the service.

I use this procedure all the time without problems.

Hey there,
I tried to update my 1.4 to 1.5 Portable. I don't use the service in the background due to Admin/work. I overwrote the .exe file but on starting up, it created new settings.
I have all data in the folder with Everything.exe.

Code: Select all

Session-1.5a.json
Search History-1.5a.csv
Everything-1.5a.ini
Which didn't import my 1.4 setup/settings etc

Any ideas ? I suppose I could screen grab everything in the settings/filters etc and do it manually.
Thanks.
