Fatal error: out of memory

When I attempted today to update the indexing for an external hard drive I recently added several large files to, Everything 1.5 repeatedly crashed with the attached error message:

Even closing all other programs to free up as much memory as I could did not fix the problem. I saw that I was not using the latest version and updated to 1.5.0.1383a.x86, but still ran into the same fatal error.

I have consistently found that 1.5 takes up massive amounts of memory - I do not have "Index file content" enabled, for the record - but up until now I was able to at least get it to work.

Please try the x64 version of Everything.
The x86 version is limited to 2GB of RAM.

Backup your %APPDATA%\Everything folder
Uninstall Everything x86
Restore your %APPDATA%\Everything folder
Install Everything x64

Hi.
I am running Win11 and i get same error every time i start up my pc. I am running 1.5a64 and the only way i can work is by removing Everything from the startup.
I love the program but as of now i have to look for other apps to do the job

Please try forcing a fresh reindex:

• Please make sure Everything is not running (File -> Exit)
• In Windows Explorer, type in the following address and press ENTER:
  
  %LOCALAPPDATA%\Everything
• Delete your Everything.db
• Restart Everything.
• Click OK.

I did what you said.
I restarted the pc also and opened Everything app.
It started to Index Properties and came to around 35 %, i got a black screen. I could see on the Task Manager that it used around 98 to 99 % memory.
When i restart the PC and delete the Everything Icon in the right bottom list of atarted apps there is no problem so it is coming from the indexing.

Everything is not designed to index the content of all files.

Please set an include only files filter.
(Tools -> Options -> Content -> Include only files)

Use Process Explorer to get a better understanding of the memory in use, there are other more in-depth programs I presume, but Process Explorer should help get a sense of how much it actually uses. The default columns should be enough.
EBV does not take up massive amounts of memory, it depends entirely on what you have.
I have all standard and 6 extra properties for one device that has 52 million files on it, it should take around 9GB when it finishes re-indexing. The original had only standard properties and took about 8GB. This is GB of "Private Bytes" in Process Explorer as I do not use Task Manager for memory checks.
A quick glance at "Commit Charge", may not be a part of the default stats for the status bar, helps shed light on the real memory limit in Windows.

If no more replies, I suppose the conclusion is that it was content indexing and disabling or excluding file types fixed EBV accumulating too much memory from trying to index it all.
