disable difference between _ and -
disable difference between _ and -
Hi
I created these folders to test:
Lanegan_Mark
Lanegan-Mark
LaneganMark
If I do this search
Lanegan_Mark
I only see one folder while I would like to see all 3
same thing if I search
Lanegan-Mark
Basically it seems that Everything finds differences between "_" and "-" and " " (space)
and I would like to disable this function, is it possible?

Re: disable difference between _ and -
Here I have a solution without the search word(s), i.e. these must be entered in the search box.
I am not aware of any other solution.
The following query can also be set in the filter in the ‘Search:’ field if only folders are being searched for:

Thanks
I followed the procedure, only changing the name of the search in Similarity search without the long part you put, but in the end it doesn't give me results,
when I set it as a filter, the folder that contains the folders I created, appears empty. If I set it as a filter again Everything, the folders appear
I don't understand where I'm going wrong.

A picture of the filter definition might help.
Did you use the same words (folder names) in the search query?

Re: disable difference between _ and -
I have now searched in three paths using the ‘Similarity search - soundex:’ filter.
It is not clear to me why the search term ‘LaneganMark’ does NOT find the other folders.
However, it is probably due to Soundex, because all folders are found with the similarity search Levenshtein distance. *)

I'm afraid I can't offer any further support for this topic as I am not familiar with Soundex.
Code: Select all

Thank you, you were very kind
Honestly it seems strange to me that there is no function that does what I would like.
The files found on the Internet are almost all separated by _ or - and there is no sense that they are not treated the same way.
I hope someone can help me, thanks again

Re: disable difference between _ and -
Please consider the following:
Enable Ignore Punctuation and Ignore punctuation in filename and search:
Search for:
-or-
Paste your search without punctuation: Ctrl + Shift + V
Enable Ignore Punctuation and Ignore punctuation in filename and search:
- In Everything, from the Search menu, Check Ignore Punctuation.
- From the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Advanced tab on the left.
- To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
punc - Select: ignore_punctuation_type
- Set the value to: Filename and search
- Click OK.
Search for:
Lanegan Mark
-or-
Paste your search without punctuation: Ctrl + Shift + V
Re: disable difference between _ and -
hello void, thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately it doesn't work. When I reopen the program after the changes, the Ignore punctuation option is not checked (even though it was popped up when I closed the program). If I check it I get the same result as before

Re: disable difference between _ and -
Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab on the left.
- Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
- Uncheck Run as administrator.
- Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
- Click OK.
- Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
- Restart Everything.
Re: disable difference between _ and -
it doesn't work
In General I had the fourth, fifth and sixth items checked. Now I did as you told me and checked the first, fourth and fifth.
I closed the program, checked that the service was closed, I reopened and the Ignore puntuation item is not checked and the search gives the same results as before. If you want I can send you the screenshots of the settings

was disabled. I enabled it but now it's a mess.
I opened the folder that contains the Lanegan folders (named New Folder) but Everything shows me all the folders I have on my entire PC that are called "New Folder"
And if I search it doesn't give me results

I don't think I understood but from now on the search will be on the words
Pippo_Topolino
I hope that goes well

Re: disable difference between _ and -
As I understand it (and based on the author's advice), you should enter the following for the folders
‘Pippo_Topolino’, “PippoTopolino”, “PippoTopolino-”, “Pippo-Topolino” as the search term: Pippo Topolino,
so that the punctuation: ‘_’, ‘-’ can be ignored and all folders are listed.
Select the folder name ‘Pippo_Topolino’, Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+Shift+V in Everything 1.5a will do the same (all folders are listed).

Re: disable difference between _ and -
sorry but I don't understand
The words I put are, obviously, an example and I would like it to be always applied. I would like the search not to consider the difference between - _ and the space. Since almost all the files you download from the internet have these symbols or spaces inside the file names.
I think I followed what Void told me, I'm waiting for him to tell me where I'm wrong because I don't understand English well and I don't understand what you're advising me. If you tell me step by step what to do, I'll do it. But I would like it to be clear that the words I used for the search are just an example

Re: disable difference between _ and -
Hi,
I understand ‘Ignore Punctuation’ as follows:
- Search for: Pippo AND (Operator: Space) Topolino (finds: PippoTopolino, PippoTopolino-) ...
- and ignore the punctuation automatically (also finds: Pippo_Topolino, Pippo-Topolino)
The search term as specified is therefore required to find all folders.
> I would like the search not to consider the difference between - _ and the space.
If you insert your search term with Ctrl+Shift+V in Everything 1.5a, then your conditions are fulfilled in my opinion.
Have you ever tested this at all?
Code: Select all
Search term: Pippo Topolino
Setting: ignore_punctuation_type -> Filename and search
- Search for: Pippo AND (Operator: Space) Topolino (finds: PippoTopolino, PippoTopolino-) ...

Re: disable difference between _ and -
Thanks, I know the trick for have a solution
I only asked if this function could be included in the settings because I find it useful.. but thanks
Maybe it would be enough to tell Everything to interpret the "Paste" as if it were a Ctrl+Shift+V command

Re: disable difference between _ and -
That's described above:tell Everything to interpret the "Paste" as if it were a Ctrl+Shift+V command
Note that with that change, you would not be able to search for (say) "Lanegan-Mark" explicitly (with the -, & without also getting Lanegan_Mark or 'Lanegan Mark' results). From the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the Advanced tab on the left.
To the right of Show settings containing, search for:
punc
Select: ignore_punctuation_type
Set the value to: Filename and search
Click OK.
Re: disable difference between _ and -
I think you can even define your wish yourself in the settings:
Everything Options - 1.5.0.1383a (x64) > Keyboard > Show commands containing: paste
Edit | Paste
Search Edit | Paste Without Punctuation
...

Is main Search menu -> Ignore punctuation checked?
Are any other search options checked under the main Search menu?
-Please make sure regex is unchecked under the main Search menu.
-Please make sure the Everything filter is active under the main Search menu.
Please make sure Ignore punctuation in filename and search is enabled:

1 - Yes
2 - No, only Ignore punctuation and Everything
3 - regex is unchecked
Is strange, now I don't see the punc voice.

BRAVA! It works perfectly
Thanks for the help, now I will have to try to get used to using the keyboard but I'm already happy.
I hope that void can solve the problem at the base and that it also works by right-clicking and pasting but I'm already happy like this
You were very kind
Edit:
unfortunately I see that if it gives me only one result I'll paste
MarkLanegan
Re: disable difference between _ and -
The author probably knew that this question would come from you and has already taken precautions:
Right-click in the search bar of Everything 1.5a and then click on the menu item ‘Paste Without Punctuation’.
That is the expected result for me.
(Otherwise, in my opinion, a similarity search is required).
Please see also my explanation here.
Please give a detailed description of this case.
- Which folder name was copied to the clipboard?
- Which shortcut was used to paste the name into the Everything search box?
- What is the EXACT shortcut description under ‘Keyboard’?
- Which Everything version is used? E.g. Everything 1.5.0.1383a (x64)
- What result did you expect?
I.e. which folders do you think would be considered to appear in the search result?

It is only possible with a similarity search, e.g. ‘Levenshtein distance’.
You can search for all folders to get all folders, just not for the folder ‘MarkLanegan’!
Please see also my explanation here.
However, you can find out for yourself which search query returns which search results by copying the folder names
one after the other and then pasting them into the Everything search box with Ctrl+V (your shortcut for "Paste Without Punctuation").
Folder names:
(Mark Lanegan)
Mark Lanegan
Mark_Lanegan
MarkLanegan
Mark-Lanegan
I don't think I can contribute any more to this topic.

Re: disable difference between _ and -
In such a case you can already exclude the similarity search ‘Levenshtein distance’,
because after another check and your last given new folder name: (Mark Lanegan) ... with round brackets
it turned out that (only) this folder name in brackets is NOT found by the similarity search
when a search is performed for the folder name: MarkLanegan
Re: disable difference between _ and -
Thanks but your english is difficult for me, and Levenshtein distance for me is arabic
Re: disable difference between _ and -

Re: disable difference between _ and -
The following should find all the combinations you seek
regex:Lanegan[ \-_]?Mark
the regex [ \-_]? should match 0 or 1 of the characters in the square brackets. The \- matches the "-" character literally as it can also
be used to give a range of characters inside the brackets

Thank you for the RegEx code!
2Laura
In this case, your search query should look like this:
(Another query is shown on the second tab. ‘Enable Regex’ must also be carried out there).
These entries in the search box of Everything also work (WITHOUT ‘Enable Regex’ being executed -> ‘REGEX’ not present in the status bar):
- OR -
- OR -
A bookmark with a shortcut that inserts the search text into the Everything search box is probably recommended.
This would make it possible to simply overwrite the search text for each new search query.

Re: disable difference between _ and -
guys, you are very kind and I thought I asked something easy.
Activating REGEZ would be fine but I didn't understand how to set it as ctrl+V. I don't think those strange symbols can be inserted. Furthermore, the results work but it doesn't see me if the name and surname are reversed.
I'm not an expert but I hope that in the future (maybe with the help of AI) it will be possible to do searches that look for X consecutive letters, ignoring spaces and various symbols. And that, maybe I can do it with reversed letters too, so that Everything searches for both
marklanegan and laneganmark (or fractions of them) (maybe in the settings decide how many consecutive (and inverted) letters are searched for) ignoring all the symbols that can be found between one letter and another
But I'm already very happy that by doing ctrl+v now, with your help, the symbols are not pasted between the words and that's already important.
Thanks!

Honestly it seems strange to me that there is no function that does what I would like.
The files found on the Internet are almost all separated by _ or - and there is no sense that they are not treated the same way.
I hope someone can help me, thanks again
_ and - are not the same character and people may use them for different purposes (I do when I process many files).
There are naming conventions using _ (e.g. snake_case). Dashes are often used in dates (ISO 8601 convention).
So I don't see why they should be treated the same in general.
Perhaps, if you want them to be the same, you could choose one and rename them with a file renamer.
