Using filters, but showing results directly?

Post by abr01 »

The filters work fine, they are great. Is there maybe a way to show the filter results immediately, without having to type a blank character? So clicking on the filter would directly show the results.

Here, with version 1.5, it already works like this.
Use the filter bar drop-down list.

Yes, i have that side bar here, but when clicking on one of the filters does nothing. I have to type at least a blank/space character, until the results show up. Did i oversee some setting?

And i am using the latest alpha, of course.

Seems like a misunderstanding. I don't mean to have a list already, when refining the results by clicking the item type filters, like "Audio". I mean a filter like ext:jpg;tiff;bmp; dm:4weeks, that i would like to show all results by just clicking on the filter field, so no search argument is given. Is that possible?

I created a filter with your search.
Selecting that filter on the Filter bar works without any search argument.
So I don't see any problem here, it works as you want.

Now i found the reason. I prefer to have an empty list prior to the search. Therefore i use the option 'Hide results when the search is empty'. My suggestion is, to make custom filters act independently from this setting.

Extra option for custom filters

Post by abr01 »

Would it be possible to use 'the 'Hide results when the search is empty' option for the normal search, to have a cleaner starting look in the window, but to have custom filters ignoring this setting? I prefer an empty start window, but when i use custom filters (user made), i'd prefer 'one click', instead of having to type a blank character to get the list. Basically an sub-option for 'Hide results when the search is empty', something like 'for the all files window only'.

Thank you for your reply abr01,

I'll add a search function to override the "hide results when the search is empty" setting.

You'll be able to use this function in your filter search.

For example:
no-hide-empty-search-results:

I'll make another post here once this is ready for testing.

Thanks a lot void! I don't know, if this option makes sense to other users, but maybe it does. Cool.

What is the problem with the default to show results on opening a window.
It takes a few seconds to fill the display, and you even can set what sort is used by default.

@horst.epp, it's not any kind of problem, but since that option was available, i preferred the cleaner look and got used to it, that's all. And you're right, there is no delay, when having the list displayed.

Just wanted to say: Nice elegant solution!

@abr01: *technically*, the Everything filter is a filter too, so implementing your suggestion would also end up showing results in that case.
Clever and clean way of @void to solve it.

Yeah, that came to my mind too. At first i thought user made filters are distinct from the basic search. But yes, it's a nice way to give us an extra choice.

On second (or third) thought: The Everything filter is actually not a filter. An empty filter at best.

(I already say too many stupid things; one less is preferable :D )

Still: a clever solution ..

Everything 1.5.0.1357a adds a no-hide-empty-search-results: search function.

To set a filter to always show results, even when the search is empty, include the following in your filter search:

no-hide-empty-search-results:

For example:
  • In Everything, from the Search menu, click Organize filters....
  • Select your custom filter and click Edit....
  • Change the search to:

    Code: Select all

    no-hide-empty-search-results: ext:jpg;tiff;bmp; dm:4weeks

  • Click OK.
  • Click OK.
When this filter is active, results will still be shown when the search is empty.
