Fairly new to having systems with SSD as system drive, I discovered something I'd like to share.

I have an SSD "gum drive" in an external enclosure which my system recognizes as drive "E:" when it's active/ plugged in via USB-C.

I was about to look for a specific .flac audio file which I know that Everything will find for me in seconds. Of course the E: drive which has that media was not "plugged in". So I plugged it in!

I see Everything's first action is to scan C:. Hmm. So this won't take seconds. But the eternal drive gets pretty hot to just leave it plugged in constantly, IMO. I don't do benchmarks to A/B actual sys performance, but I suspect having it plugged it must affect performance in some way, whether improved or degraded.
Regardless of general performance with or without that drive plugged in, since my system has been running for at least 12 hrs (probably more), I don't think Everything needs to scan C: at this time, as nothing has changed there. I see it's made it here by now:


Is there a setting I can configure so that Everything will know I only want it to update that newly added resource (e.g. Drive "E:")?

I realize there is a configuration to automatically add/ remove newly discovered NTFS drives for example. But I don't see an option to adjust Everything's behaviour when new media is discovered-- that is-- how it handles the files currently indexed. Please advise.

Everything will perform a "quick reindex" when you add a drive to your index.

This "quick reindex" is done in memory and should never touch your disks. (except for your new E: drive)
It should only take a few seconds.

To have full control over what is indexed:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the NTFS tab on the left.
• Uncheck Automatically include new fixed volumes.
• Uncheck Automatically include new removable volumes.
• Uncheck Automatically remove offline volumes.
• Click OK.

When these options are unchecked, Everything will keep your E: drive in your index.
Even when your E: drive is offline.



To exclude your E: drive: (or other unwanted drives)

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the NTFS tab on the left.
• Select your E: drive.
• Uncheck Include in database.
• Click OK.

My perception is that it's doing more than a quick index. I don't know how long I spent composing the initial message, but as you can see, it was still scanning my Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) path by the time I was finished.

Are you running Everything 1.4 or 1.5? (menu:Help > About Everything)
Assuming 1.5 as you posted in the Everything 1.5 forum.


Your \\wsl.localhost\Debian drive is likely configured under menu:Tools > Options > Indexes > Network Drives or menu:Tools > Options > Indexes > Folders.
These types of drives are rescanned and updated on a schedule. Default at 3 AM, but can be configured to your liking.
If that drive is not available at that time (Everything not running; drive offline), Everything will rescan as soon as the conditions are right again.

Easiest solution is to keep Everything running in the background, so it can keep its indexes up-to-date:
Enable Start Everything on system startup ( menu:Tools > Options > General )



Other solution: let Everything update *only* on the scheduled times:
Paste the following in the search bar and press ENTER:

Code: Select all

/folder_update_rescan_asap=0

The result will be shown in the statusbar for a couple of seconds.

Thank you. I was about to try to paste that as you suggested. Then I realized I'm on a Linux system! lol.

But I will try it. Currently, I pressed the "Reset to Defaults" button on all/ most applicable screens. I think that helped. Not sure if it's indexing all locations as I'd desired/ enjoyed prior. Actually, not sure what changed about that scanning. Drive configurations I suppose. I used to have a couple HDD's slaved to my linux box, and I was accessing those w/ Everything via \\linux-box\mount\ ("Samba" protocol).
