Advanced Rename for folders

Post by Thy Grand Voidinesss »

Under the

Edit > Advanced > Advanced Rename...

users can evoke the window of the Rename feature, which has only boxes for Filenames. What about Folders? If Everything allows for finding of just folders, than why does it not allow for bulk changing of their names. Although it does - but only if selected items themselves are folders or files and folders. But what about if a user spots some wrongly / inadequate named folders while looking through list of only files - why force him to adjust filtering expression in Search Edit and / or what is chosen in the Filter Bar menu?

I propose this adjustments / updates:

#1] Change in current "Rename" window "Filename" to "Item" or to "Item (Filename / Folder)"

#2] Change the "Rename" title of the window to "Advanced Rename - Items" or jaust "Advanced Rename"

#3] Add separate entry

Edit > Advanced > Advanced Rename Folders

#4] Name that new window "Advanced Rename - Folders"

#5] Use for description of boxes in it "Folders" instead of "Files"

#7] Add separate entry

Edit > Advanced > Advanced Rename Files

#8] Name that new window "Advanced Rename - Files"

#9] Leave in it current descriptions of boxes as "Files"

This way user:

● could choose what to rename from any kind of selection - thus save time and clicks

● leave the Search Edit and Filter Bar as they are in a given moment - thus not disrupt the workflow

● have a fail-safe for being more sure what really was selected for renaming and what will be affected by the process that is about to be executed- as e.g. "Advanced Rename - Files" window would not open if even one folder would be among selected items

Although steps #7-9 are not necessary - but without them there will be no fail-safe for all cases of selection. And the bare minimum are steps #1-2

As for comparison: free-file-manager FreeCommander treats all selected items the same, so it does not have separate sub-features / boxes for files and folders. But in Everything this of course would not be possible, as we always select a row which can be created for both a file and a folder [hence a need for different approach]

(I'll just note that if you right-click - an individual directory (path) [i.e., when focus is over the directory name], you are afforded various directory related options, including rename.)

I did not comprehend most of it, but you can rename folders as well as files.

Rename does change the name (without path). If you want to change the path, change the path first (in Everything/Explorer/...) or use the Advanced Move feature (menu:Edit > Advanced > Advanced Move To Folder )

That sure comes in handy when I already have selected multiple paths and want to rename one parent folder without loosing created selection
