PDF-Tags with German Umlauts wrong in list?

Post by Michi »

Hi!

Running ET 1.5.0.1340a (x64) I see some wrongs PDF-tags in the result list.

Please see the following screenshots. As you might see, the PDF tag has the characters Ö and Ü whereas the column shows the Ö with two boxes and the Ü is missing completely. There is also a © characters somewhere in the tag that is additionally missing in the tags-column.

FWIW, I cannot search for those tags either, like "tags:Persönliches".
OTH, I've got some other, earlier PDFs from the same author, that properly display those Umlauts and I can search for them as well.

Did I, by any chance, miss any setting in ET?

Hi and thanks for your answer!

Is it OK for you if I upload the PDFs to a file share or to my one-drive because of it's size of about 21MB?
Or should I try sending anyway?

Thank you!

I can receive 50MB emails, but you might not be able to send large emails.

Please send a link to a file share if it is easier for you.

Another option is to attach it here to a forum post. (128MB limit)

@Michi, how are you tagging PDFs? I wasn’t aware Windows could do that.

Everything 1.5.0.1341a will now gather tags from the Windows property system.

Everything will try the built-in property handler if the system doesn't return a tag.

This change was commented out and will be available in the next build.

If you are indexing tags, please try selecting all PDF files and pressing Ctrl + F5 to refresh this information.
Older versions of Everything had trouble with Unicode PDF tags which may have carried over into the newer versions.

Thank you for the reply Void, and for your tremendous work on this app.
Everything will try the built-in property handler if the system doesn't return a tag.
Do you mean a property handler built-in to Windows or Everything?

I don’t think I was clear on my question. My confusion comes from the fact that when I right click a PDF file and choose Properties, then Details, there isn’t a "tags" property that I can assign a value to. The properties are limited to things like size, name, owner, type, and a few others. But I want to assign meaningful custom tags to my PDFs for organizational purposes, and I’m unsure how to do that.

Is the only way to install a third party software that Everything supports? If so, which ones are recommended?

Sorry for late reply. Windows Explorer is indeed not able to modify PDF tags. I'm using PDF-Xchange Editor Pro for this task.

OTH those ODF files I'm having trouble with to be properly indexed are created by a German IT magazine and tagged with some details I cannot modify because of the files encryption settings.

The Everything built-in property handler.

Please note: Everything 1.5.0.1341a is not giving priority to the Windows property system as expected.
I was testing this change and accidentally left it off in 1341a..
The Windows property system will have priority in 1342a+.

There's no PDF property handler on Windows by default.
You'll need to install a third party PDF property handler.
Please post any here if you know of one..

Everything 1.5.0.1340a+ should be gathering PDF tags correctly from the Everything built-in property handler.

The PDF-XChange Editor (Editor Plus) includes a working PDF property handler.

Yes, see:

In my special case from above, not of much help, because those PDF files are write protected. But for others this tool works perfectly well!
