Volumes not removed after disconnecting sdcard

I'm having the same problem as before where disconnecting a micro sd/sdcard doesn't remove the volume from everything. This time it's a 1 GB sdcard. Why aren't these volumes being removed from everything? They linger on within everything.

Please try enabling automatically remove offline volumes:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the FAT tab on the left.
• Uncheck Automatically remove offline volumes.
• Click the NTFS tab on the left.
• Uncheck Automatically remove offline volumes.
• Click OK.

I have literally no removable USB's plugged into my PC, but the wierd P drive is still showing up in FAT section. What is the cause of this? Are u certain that the newest 1339a alpha version has fixed this issue? it seems to linger on for me..

Do you have any suggestions for this ? I've even upgraded to the latest version of everything yesterday and the wierd FAT P:\ drive is still not removed even after uninstalling and reinstalling to the latest version. Is there something going on behind the scene?

Hi Anmac, I apologize for my delay in responding. I have spent the past two weeks wrestling with a new laptop and Win11.

(1) I am a beginner with Everything, so be prepared to drop any/every thing I suggest when a more experienced member jumps in,

(2) Right now I too am playing with indexes; specifically trying to flip-flop between my regular settings (Index an NTFS C: and a FAT T:) and a testing setup (index ONLY my memory key F:)

(3) This rather lengthy chunk of advice comes from the incomplete User Tutorial I am writing. It is the first step in an organized solution to solving problems with indexes.

Problems with Indexes. I believe that there are still a few bugs in Index handling, but before you leap into the forum, try isolating the problem.
We will start by removing every possible source of data for Everything. We do that by telling Everything NOT to include entities like drives and folders in the database. This should have the effect of your never being able to find anything , correct?
Don’t worry for now about the “Enable USN Journal settings.

Here is what I see when I choose Tools, Options, Indexes. IGNORE THE BLUE-MARKED CHECK BOXES. Their status is NOT part of this section.

Files and Folders
As a first line of defence, I recommend: that you focus on the sub-headings below the “Indexes” heading.

FAT
For each drive listed here, select it and check OFF the setting for “Include in Database”

NTFS
For each drive listed here, select it and check OFF the setting for “Include in Database”

ReFS
For each drive listed here, select it and check OFF the setting for “Include in Database”

Network Drives
For each drive listed here, select it and check OFF the setting for “Include in Database”

Folders
For each drive listed here, select it and check OFF the setting for “Include in Database”

File Lists
For each Folder listed here, select it and check OFF the setting for “Include in Database”

Network Index
I don’t know this so can’t advise

Properties
I don’t know this so can’t advise

Content
I don’t know this so can’t advise

Exclude
For each drive listed here, select it and check OFF the setting for “Include in Database”

Once this is done, exit Options and try searching for a file. If we have successfully eliminated all sources of material for indexes, then Everything should not be able to find any files or folders, Correct?

If you are still seeing files from volumes that should not be there, then attack other entities in Tools, Options, Indexes.

Files and Folders

Check OFF the three “Automatically” settings; Check ON “Include in database” while you check OFF “Attempt to monitor changes” and choose ‘never rescan”. Then check OFF “Include in database”
NTFS
Repeat the operations outlined in “FAT”
ReFS
Repeat the operations outlined in “FAT”
Network Drives
Repeat the operations outlined in “FAT”
Folders
Remove all folders from the list.
File Lists
Check OFF ”Monitor Changes”
Network Index
Check OFF ”Monitor Changes”
Properties
Remove all entries from the list, make sure all check boxes are set OFF.
Content
Check ON “Index file content” while you check OFF the two “Exclude boxes”, Then check OFF “Index file content”
Exclude
Make sure that the “Exclude”, “Exclude” and “Enable” check boxes are set to OFF

Once this is done, exit Options and try searching for a file. If we have successfully eliminated all sources of material for indexes, then Everything should not be able to find any files or folders, Correct?

If at this stage we have made barren every option for indexes within Everything and you still see objects returned from your rogue storage medium, then I would conclude that there is a bug of some sort acting here.

As stated way above, no expert I, but I feel that if, as a user, I have made a best effort at inhibiting indexes of any sort, the rogue entity's objects still show up, then we have defined a clear situation where a bug should be traceable.

I know that Void reads debug-files that i don't understand, but I figure that at this point the load of debugging data should be greatly reduced, and speed up resolution of the bug.

Wow thats an incredible explanation. I have followed your steps exactly and what I found is that the P drive does not show up in the result list but it still exists in the indexes section. This has been bugging me for a couple weeks now so instead I resorted to completwly uninstalling and reinstalling everything and that seems to have cleared all the ghost drives

Hi anmac. Keep in mind that there are others here who know more than I, but use whatever you have learned to learn more!

I found, and still find, that Tools, Options, Indexes dialogue confusing, Others have pointed out to me that the dialogue has two purposes (to my end-user's eyes).
(a) It is a shopping-checklist of all drives (folders, networks etc) that Everything knows or has known about
(b) it is a screen that allows users (like us) to tell Everything which of those items should be used in today's index.

This morning my screen shows a memory key drive F: in the shopping list, although I removed the key yesterday lunchtime and have since re-booted twice.
Everything has remembered that I sometimes use a memory key F: and preserved it in my list (see "grocery" below)
Last night I did not make my regular nightly backup, otherwise we would see a Y: USB drive mentioned at the foot of this list (yellow arrow), although I do not now have that backup drive plugged in.
I have "Automatically remove offline drives" checked OFF, so once I make that "last-night's backup" this morning, there will be a ghostly "Y" drive in the list.
Furthermore after tonight's backup, a second issue of drive "Y:" will appear in the list. By the end of this week seven Y: drives will have accumulated at the foot of the list.
I will grow tired of seeing them, so I will check ON "Automatically remove offline drives" and leave it checked ON. I know about my good habit of introducing a Y: drive each evening.

Does that make sense?

Back to my grocery shopping list: It is a prefabricated list of every foodstuff I buy during a year. It includes four kinds of potatoes, white flour, bread flour, wholewheat flour, cooking margarine, table margarine, butter and so on. Before heading to the store I print off a copy and put a tick-mark against items that are running low, those items I must purchase on Monday, but the other items just sit there, I disregard them.

If you have a memory key, or a USB drive, you might want to check my explanation with a physical test.:-
(You may have to exit the Tools, Options, Indexes dialogue periodically to allow Everything to react to the changes, but you should not have to exit Everything, and definitely not reinstall Everything)

(1) Check OFF "Automatically remove offline drives".

(2) Inspect your Tools, Options, Indexes dialogue; the drive does not show.
(3) Insert the drive in a USB socket.
(4) Inspect your Tools, Options, Indexes dialogue; the drive does show.
(5) Remove the drive
(6) Inspect your Tools, Options, Indexes dialogue; the drive should remain visible!
(7) Select your ghostly drive and use the Remove command button to remove it from the list.

(8) Check ON "Automatically remove offline drives".

(9) Repeat the steps (2) through (7) above.
(10) The drive should appear in the list when the drive is plugged in to the USB port, but the same drive should disappear from the list after the drive has been removed (because you have asked Everything to remove it from the list automatically).

If that doesn't work then i know of several members here would love to jump in, and one developer too!

I have waited a few days to build up some images; here they are.

For the past few days I have run with "Automatically remove offline volumes" checked OFF.
In that time I have created (and used) s0ome daily "B"lotter drives (drives B:) and run a few nightly backups to an external USB drive (Y:), and now those instances of use lie around like so many chunks of driftwood.

I could choose the "Remove" command button to remove the debris, one item at a timem but I rather fancy checking ON the "Automatically remove offline volumes" and let Everything deal with it from this day forth for Evermore!
