1337a Online Network shares appear as offline?

Post by Rene »

Just curious if anyone else has noticed that?

Also my USB drives that aren't connected, do have the online color.

Thank you for the issue report Rene,

Is Everything suddenly running as administrator? [Administrator] is shown in the window caption.

Everything will normally not have access to your network drives when running as an admin.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

Could you please send your Tools -> Debug -> Statistics to support@voidtools.com
The statistics will show which volumes are online/offline.

If the online/offline status is not correct, we can look at the debug logs next to work out why.

Hi Void

i've just deleted my ini file and launched Ev and started debug logging.

i set the options as you requested and restarted Ev.

After restarting the Run as administrator is square-checked.
it was unchecked before restarting, so i re-re-unchecked it and restarted Ev and sure enough it's back to square-checked.

As for the netshares, they still appear as offline but i can db-click a file or folder to open them. You can forget about the usb drives thing for now, they seem ok.

Sending debug logs now...

oh and ps: Ev launches as admin every time, regardless of the checkbox.

the word Administrator appears in the top of the window.

i deleted the shortcuts and relaunched Ev directly with the exe, still happens.

Thank you for the debug logs.

The debug logs show Everything running as admin and Everything unable to see your mapped network drives (error 2)

Everything unable to see your mapped network drives when running as admin is expected.

The question is now why is Everything suddenly running as admin...

The debug logs show the Everything Service is installed and running.
Do you have multiple copies of Everything trying to run? (please try a search for: Everything .exe )
Do you have any third party apps that might be stopping the Everything Service?

Please make sure Everything is running as a standard user:
  • Right click your Everything.exe or a shortcut to Everything
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Uncheck Run this program as an administrator.
  • Click OK.
Please make sure Everything is running as a standard user:
  • Right click your Everything.exe or a shortcut to Everything
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Shortcut tab.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK.

Please let me know if Everything is still running as admin and the issue persists.

that's exactly what I've done and I just have no idea what makes it run as admin.

the Ev service works fine, no problem there.

but the program is just starting in admin for some reason.

no multiple copies of Everything, just the alpha.

Please make sure you exit Everything before relaunching Everything as a standard user.

How are you launching Everything? eg: from a shortcut? -try launching from Everything.exe directly.
Maybe there's something weird going on with the desktop explorer process running as admin.

Does the issue persist?

yep, directly with the exe

maybe it's something in the registry. uninstalling Ev leaves some reg entries but before cleaning them up, I'm looking through them to see if anything is out of sorts, not that I know what I'm looking for.

I'll reboot after and reinstall ev1337a to see...

Is Everything listed in your registry under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Click Change settings for all users
  • Uncheck Run this program as an administrator.
  • Click OK.

all folders in c:

scanned for viruses, mbam too. system is clear.

installed ev1335a and it too is doing it, showing shares as offline. Curiouser and curiouser

Everything still running as admin?

What does Process Explorer show for Everything.exe?
-What is the parent process?
-Is the parent process also running as admin?

yes as admin.

parent processes are wininit.exe\services.exe and explorer.exe
both admin top processes

Tested UAC, so after enabling it and rebooting, now Ev runs as a normal user not admin.

but the shares still show as offline.

Also now when I check Run as admin in options/general, it restarts right-away as admin with the uac prompt, standard behaviour. No prompt after reboot, also normal.

but shares show offline.

Thank you for the information.
parent processes are wininit.exe\services.exe and explorer.exe
both admin top processes
The parent Explorer.exe process running as admin is not normal.
This was most likely the cause of Everything running elevated.

Please make sure [Administrator] is not shown in the Everything window caption and could you please send some more debug information:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, check Start Debug Logging.
  • From the Index menu, click Stop Updating.
  • From the Index menu, click Update Indexes.
  • From the Tools menu, under the Debug submenu, click Stop Debug Logging.
---This will open your %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt file in Notepad.
  • Could you please send this file to support@voidtools.com

Thank you for the debug logs Rene,

ReadDirectoryChanges is currently not working with QNAP devices.
A handle to a folder on the mapped network drive can be created fine.
An overlapped call to ReadDirectoryChanges succeeds with this handle.
Unfortunately, GetOverlappedResult will return error 2: ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND shortly after.
Apparently, this was working with previous QNAP firmware.

To disable ReadDirectoryChanges:
  • Copy and paste the following into your Everything search box:
    /read_directory_changes=0
  • Press ENTER in your Everything search box.
  • If successful, read_directory_changes=0 is shown in the status bar for a few seconds.
  • Restart Everything:
  • Copy and paste the following into your Everything search box:
    /restart
  • Press ENTER in your Everything search box.
Everything will now use SHChangeNotifyRegister to detect local changes to the QNAP mapped network drive.
Only local changes will be detected.
Remote changes from other machines will be missed.
Everything will rescan the QNAP mapped network drive daily to pickup any missed changes.
Everything uses ReadDirectoryChanges to detect if folders are online/offline.
When ReadDirectoryChanges is disabled, the mapped network drive will appear as online.
