UAC Headaches

Post by Mute »

Hello there!

I've been using Everything for years and been loving it. Since a new Installation of Windows 10 I keep getting UAC-prompts though and can't get rid of them.

So far I have:
  • un- and reinstalled different versions of Everything.
    Ran the installer as admin.
Have turned the Everything-Service off and on again - with and without restarting the application in between.
    Ran the application as admin.
Made sure the "run as admin" option is turned off - both in the menu and in the .ini file.
But. To no avail. Every time I start a new instance of Everything, UAC gets triggered

The only way I've found to circumvent this so far is to use the portable version, which doesnt let me use global hotkeys.

Does anybody have any other ideas where this issue might stem from?

So how do you start Everything?
If it is through a shortcut, try it with a new, fresh shortcut (shortcuts can make applications run elevated)

These are the recommended settings:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.

Please make sure Everything is running as a standard user:
  • Right click your Everything.exe or a shortcut to Everything
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Uncheck Run this program as an administrator.
  • Click OK.

Hallelujah!

There's the issue. Thank you SO much!

So what apparently happened - for anybody experiencing the same issue as I do - is, that since i had to run the installer as admin (otherwise id encounter an error), windows automatically set the shortcut to the program as "run as admin". I checked the .exe a dozen times, but never thought of looking at the shortcut.

Thank you very much! For some reason the global hotkeys still refuse to hotkey. But thats okay, I'll figure that out eventually.

Thanks a lot!
