When I make an entry in my host file with my hosts file editor, it asks if I want to create a duplicate entry starting with www. ie. thisone.com and www.thisone.com.
Is the duplicate www. entry necessary?

Don't really know about such things, but my thoughts are...
you would want to use www.domain.com rather then domain.com
note that some sites, like https://slickdeals.net/ are "slickdeals.net" rather then "www.slickdeals.net"
- again, not really knowing what that means, or if it might just be some setting on their end that they've chosen for some reason?
try a ping.
ping thisone.com
ping www.thisone.com
Do they return different results?
If so, then I'd think you need the version (www or not) that gives you the results you're wanting.
