Suggestion: Add Drag and Drop to move files inside Everything

Post by Bamsen »

I would really like to be able to move a file by dragging it onto a folder shown in the file list.
In the screenshot the file would be moved to the "*Nito Forsikringer Forfall" folder.

Thank you for your suggestion Bamsen,

You can already do this.

Simply hold down Ctrl to "copy" or Shift to "move".

-or-

Use right-click drag-drop onto the Path column.

Normally, Everything doesn't do anything over the path column to prevent accidental drops.

If you want to enable left-click drag-dropping onto the path column:
  • Copy and paste the following into your Everything search box:
    /allow_path_ldrop=1
  • Press ENTER in your Everything search box.
  • If successful, allow_path_ldrop=1 is shown in the status bar for a few seconds.

That's quite neat, I suspect I'd seen and forgotten that.
For higher ancestral levels you can do Ctrl-X to cut the file (or Ctrl-C to copy), then right-click the destination line and under the appropriate parent menu do Paste.
* There could be scope for the context-menu when a right-drag is dropped onto a path to provide entries for the different parent levels just like the usual parent menu system. Not top priority since there's the longer Ctrl-X method but I'd certainly use it myself if there. For example it would make it rather easy to move an item up its own parent tree too, as much as onto the tree of a similar item when you are tidying things around.
* Potentially it could even detect which part of the path you drop it onto, but I think the above is sufficient, especially as the path may be truncated for display.
