Two running process of Everything instead of one in Everything 1.4.1.1022

Post by touken »

Hello.
Today I updated my Everything app to version 1.4.1.1022. And instead of one running process, how it was on previous version of Everything, the current version(1.4.1.1022) takes two processes:

I tried all new versions on my Windows 10 x64: x32, x64, minimal.
I'm ensure that previous version of Everything takes only one process.
Can somebody explain why is that?

This is expected.

There are two Everything processes.

One process for the Everything Search client (using 44 MB of ram)

One process for the Everything Service (using 1 MB ram)

The Everything Service should use only 1MB of ram and no noticeable CPU.

You may have run the previous version as an administrator?
There will only be one Everything.exe process when running Everything as an administrator.

I recommend installing the Everything Service:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
However, If you wish to run Everything as an admin:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Check Run as administrator.
  • Uncheck Everything Service.
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
Note: Everything will now run as administrator and any program you launch from Everything will also run as an administrator.

I don't remember what exactly was done. It was long time ago.
There will only be one Everything.exe process when running Everything as an administrator.
Where can I get a previous version of Everything? It works fine for me.
I recommend installing the Everything Service
Tried this - have two running process
However, If you wish to run Everything as an admin
Also tried this - have two running process

This can occur if you launch Everything as a standard user.
The standard user Everything.exe process will wait for the admin Everything.exe process to exit.

Another option is to set Everything to run as an administrator:
  • Right click your Everything.exe or a shortcut to Everything
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Check Run this program as an administrator.
  • Click OK.
Now you should only see one Everything process.

Note: Everything will now run as administrator and any program you launch from Everything will also run as an administrator.

Older versions can be found here.
Everything 1.3 and earlier will always run as an administrator.

Problem solved.
For version 1.4.1.1022 during installation in "NTFS indexing" switched checker from "Install Everything Services" to "Run as Administrator".
And now it behaves as it should be - one process.

This way you have a big security problem.
Any programs or documents you start from results
runs with Administrator rights.

I never run any executables through Everything. I use Everything only for short list of specific files types and only in specific locations.
But, thanks for pointing out. I will remember that.
