How to stop Everything from constantly consuming up to 20% CPU?

Post by Biff »

How could one stop Everything from constantly consuming up to 20% CPU (without that I add / remove / move files or rename folders, etc?

constantly consuming up to 20% CPU
You shouldn't be seeing that, in general.
High CPU should only be momentarily, in general.

If you drag a huge number of files, oh say 100K from Everything into some other application, during the time of the drag, you could have a higher CPU - but only until the drag has finished.
(without that I add / remove / move files or rename folders, etc?)
Explain that part?

Might some external program (antivirus, perhaps) be interfering?

You could, for example, reduce the number of file extensions to only required file extensions under Indexes - Properties.

I do not add / remove / move files or rename folders, etc. but Everything uses much CPU. So something like this is meant:
If you drag a huge number of files, oh say 100K from Everything into some other application, during the time of the drag, you could have a higher CPU - but only until the drag has finished.
Might some external program (antivirus, perhaps) be interfering?
Not that I know. How could I find out? By turning off Defender?
You could, for example, reduce the number of file extensions to only required file extensions under Indexes - Properties.
Yes, OK. But what for? Because that avoids that CPU use?

Properties ... Because that avoids that CPU use?
If you index Properties, hmm, come to think of it, just what does it do?
Goes out & gathers your wanted Properties for all the files you told it to do.
(Does it update this data, or is it static?)

If you don't index, then the Properties load, lazy-load.
So as you scroll through files... it will, at that time, go out & pull your wanted data.

Maybe, & I don't know, if you do index, & that index is huge ? maybe that is, for whatever reason, causing undo CPU load?

In any case, what you are seeing is not normal (that I know of).

So...

Are you indexing Properties,
Options | Indexes -> Properties
?
Or simply lazy-loading them (adding a particular Property column, but not specifically Indexing it)?

If indexing, how many files are we talking & which Properties are you using?

Sorry, I am not quite sure to understand everything. But during that 20 % CPU use there nothing is indexed, no properties, no files. No Everything window is open, no result list, no files transferred, no folders changed (everything not done from me). I do not do anything with Everything then (perhaps besides of searching) and I did not hours before and at that moment.

If Everything had to do anything during the 20 % usage I would think the CPU load was OK.

Ahh, sorry!
I confused that with RAM usage.

No matter.

will get an extra bar of RAM for Everything with my next Notebook anyway.

So why does it use that much resource:

Even though it seems like there's nothing to be done? Is there a way to avoid that?

Everything shouldn't be using any noticeable CPU.

Please make sure there's no programs spamming your file systems:
  • In Everything, from the Index menu, click Index Journal.
  • Is this list constantly changing?
  • maybe a single file being updated over and over?

The high RAM usage is expected for 11 million objects with property indexing.
If you want to reduce the RAM usage, start by removing all indexed properties under Tools -> Options -> Properties.
You should typically see 100MB of RAM usage per 1 million files indexed.

Yes, it looks like as if programs I every day use like Thunderbird, Firefox and other "normal" programs would modify, create, delete, etc. files:

So it actually seems as if everything should be like always using these programs.

Could you please send some debug output when Everything is using high CPU:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, under the Debug Submenu, click Start Debug Logging.
---wait for Everything to have high CPU usage---
  • From the Tools menu, under the Debug Submenu, click Stop Debug Logging.
---this will open your Everything Debug Log.txt---
  • Could you please send this file to support@voidtools.com

Hard to tell from the screen shots.

If there's only a ~100 changes a minute you shouldn't see any high CPU usage in Everything.

Debug logs should show what is going on..

Yes, that is what the journal appears to show.

Please remove the Total Size on Disk property from Tools -> Options -> Properties.

This is most likely causing the high CPU usage.
