USB Stick replaced with another one?

Post by Biff »

I added a HAMA USB Stick, 4 GB:

Sometime I plugged in a Lexar 64 GB USB Stick. Now the index of the USB Stick is overwritten / indexed with the last one, so the Lexar stick is shown instead of the HAMA.

How could one avoid that?

I plugged in the HAMA again, now the second one is overwritten.

Could one show the size of a drive (and / or the free and used space) / USB Stick / SD Card here respectively near the indexes(?):

This is a bug.

Everything is currently overwriting the old existing volume with the new one when it shouldn't.
I have put this on my Things to fix list.

Thank you for the bug report.

For now, the only real option is to disable attempt to monitor changes and check never rescan. (not recommended)

OK, many thanks!

Why is it not recommended?

So each time I plugged the USB Stick in I would have to manually rescan it?

Everything will never update this volume.
You will need to manually click Rescan Now.

When I plugged in a hard drive (drive letter E:) it obviously was indexed twice. As NTFS volume and the USB Stick (drive letter E:, I believe) was replaced / overwritten under the FAT indexes.

(Not foolproof, but) you can (specifically) assign drive letters to specific Flash drives such that they will end up being (essentially) static.

So each time you plug a particular drive in, it gets the same drive letter as it was originally assigned.

You can do that manually, through Disk Management.
(Assign letters "high enough" such that they're not likely to result in collisions).

Or with something like, USBDLM - USB Drive Letter Manager for Windows.
(I've not actually used that.)

Yes, that is what I do for hard drives "all the time". And what causes some problems with duplicate indexes when Win does not know the letter anymore. Then it assigns another letter and Everythings scans the drive with that (wrong) letter and - after I have changed the letter - it scans the drive again with the other letter.

I am afraid, there is no letter left. So "high enough", at the end, the second half of the alphabet or so.

Many thanks for the link. This I could use to assign the drive letters? I once had used that program, I mean to remember it somehow was...I could not cope with it somehow. I guess, I cannot use it intuitvely.

Everything 1.5.0.1316a fixes an issue with FAT volumes indexes being replace with the wrong drive.

For example, if I had two FAT drives sharing the same drive letter, Everything would incorrectly rescan and update the wrong drive in your index.

Great, thank you very much! Is this also included in that fix(?):

Possibly.
More time and testing is needed to confirm the issue of volumes being treated as both FAT and NTFS.
