What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
I just tried to make a list of C:: I opened the file list editor under "Tools" and from the folder panel (in the result list view / Everything) I just dragged the item, C:, to the file list editor.
That does not seem to work, respectively not to be the best way, it says "No response" (is there a way to stop / interrupt scanning then?), the result list window as well, for about 10, 20 minutes now:
What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive? May be an item in the context menu after right clicking / selecting in the folder panel one or more drive letters icons / names could be good.
And I would like to have the file list like they is shown in the resultlist / folder panel (with folder tree). Not only the file listed in a simple list (without the folder / tree structure).

Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
Press 'ESCAPE'
The most straightforward way to create a list of filenames (including path) in my opinion is:
- In Everything, search for
C:
- Menu:File > Export
- Save as type: TXT Text Files (*.txt)
- Specify path and filename
- Click Save
- Done
Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
Many thanks!
Can I view in the search results window the file list the same way I can view an efu file there?
And could one make such a list by just pressing a shortcut? With a single click? For a special drive? Or all the drives plugged in / available?

Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
2 options:
1. Open the txt file as a Everything file list
- Menu: File > Open File List...
- Change EFU Everything File List to TXT Text Files (*.txt) in the dropdown list on the right bottom side of the dialog
- select your text file
Notice that the only columns shown will be Name and Pathe (Name und Pfad) as that is the only information availabke in yje txt-file. Id you need date and size too:
2. Export as EFU file
Instead of exporting the list as type: TXT Text Files (*.txt), you can also export as type: EFU Everything File List (*.efu)
When done with your filelist, return to your Everything by closing that file list (Menu:File > Close File list or double-click the filelist name in the status bar).
I need to think a bit more about a one-click solution for that. There are options ...

OK, then making an efu list is the best / the only way, if one wants all / more information than only the information of the two columns.Notice that the only columns shown will be Name and Pathe (Name und Pfad) as that is the only information availabke in yje txt-file. Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
When I make a list by just entering C: in the search field I have all of those C: volumes in the filelist:
When I make an efu list by just selecting the drive / volume in the left panel and check "Subfolders" at the bottom in that panel, do I get then all of the items of that special C: drive in the list(?):
Obviously I don't (after double clicking the efu file):

Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
Did you say to export in an txt file because it is faster than exporting / save to a efu file? Or is there any advantage of using a txt file? The most straightforward way to create a list of filenames (including path) in my opinion is:

Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
Only the visible results are exported.
If you select a single C: drive from the folder sidebar, only files/folders from that drive are shown.
You may want to clear your search to see the results from this folder sidebar selection.
As the "I:\Downloads\C.efu" will not match anything on the C: drive.
Exporting to TXT or EFU will have the same performance.
Both export only indexed information.

Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
But all of the files and folders of that drive are shown, aren't they? There is no one missing. If you select a single C: drive from the folder sidebar, only files/folders from that drive are shown.
Is it possible to open the file list instead of getting "I:\Downloads\C.efu" in the search field when double clicking "I:\Downloads\C.efu"?You may want to clear your search to see the results from this folder sidebar selection.

Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
To clarify, if you select a folder in the folder sidebar, only files/folders that are descendants of the selected folder are shown. But all of the files and folders of that drive are shown, aren't they? There is no one missing. If you select a single C: drive from the folder sidebar, only files/folders from that drive are shown.
While you do have multiple C: indexes, only files/folders for that specific folder are shown.
Files/folders from the other C: indexes are not shown.
If you wish to search all C: indexes, select "Everything" in the folder sidebar and include the following in your search:
c:
That should be the default behavior. Is it possible to open the file list instead of getting "I:\Downloads\C.efu" in the search field when double clicking "I:\Downloads\C.efu"?You may want to clear your search to see the results from this folder sidebar selection.

Please try toggling "EFU file association":
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab on the left.
- Uncheck EFU file association.
- Click Apply.
- Check EFU file association.
- Click OK.
Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
Yes, like it is in a file manager. To clarify, if you select a folder in the folder sidebar, only files/folders that are descendants of the selected folder are shown.
It already was enabled:That should be the default behavior.

In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.

Yes, still there.Does the issue persist?
Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
How are you opening the EFU file? from Everything? from Windows Explorer?
If you are opening from Everything, have you changed your open (files) command under Tools -> Options -> Context Menu?

Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
Ah, sorry, from Windows Explorer it works. I did it from FreeCommander before, with these settings at the bottom:How are you opening the EFU file? from Everything? from Windows Explorer?
It looks like this:If you are opening from Everything, have you changed your open (files) command under Tools -> Options -> Context Menu?
Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
The FreeCommander call is missing the -filelist command line option.
Could you please try changing the FreeCommander call to:
Everything.exe -filelist <filename.efu>
Could you please try changing the FreeCommander call to:
Everything.exe -filelist <filename.efu>
Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
OK, thank you.
Could you please try changing the FreeCommander call to:
Everything.exe -filelist <filename.efu
Two error message now appear when double clicking an efu file:
Cannot find the file.
And another similar one.

I don't know FreeCommanders syntax sorry.
Set the programm to: J:\Programme\Everything 1.5\Everything.exe
Please try setting the parameter to: -filelist

Ah, yes, that works, great! Many thanks!
And many thanks for the link. Unfortunately I do not have any idea of such, I wished I had.
Thank you very much!

Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
So this is the easiest way to make a file / folder list of an entire drive(?):
When I select a drive (or more) in the folder panel, press CTRL+S and save the efu file, then I have all of the items of a drive (or more) in the list without a single file / folder missing?

Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
Selecting the drive from the folder sidebar and then exporting from File -> Export will give the best results.
Leave the search blank.
All files/folders belonging to the selected folder in the folder sidebar will be exported.
I would avoid searching for C: when you have multiple C: drives indexed.
Duplicated full paths in your exported EFU file list can be ARE ignored when indexed in Everything.

OK, only a single drive / index / volume selected (not more) in the folder panel.Selecting the drive from the folder sidebar and then exporting from File -> Export will give the best results.
Or pressing CTRL+S (to export) is possible to do as well. And "Subfolders" has to be checked then necessarily, I assume?
How?Duplicated full paths in your exported EFU file list can be ignored when indexed in Everything.

I should have said duplicate full paths in EFU file lists are ignored when included in your index. How?Duplicated full paths in your exported EFU file list can be ignored when indexed in Everything.
This is no option to index duplicated full paths in EFU file lists.
Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
How at allFull paths MUST be unique for each single EFU file lists when indexed.
How can path duplicates even arise (unless, of course, you make a list twice from the same drive)? If the drive letters are different it should not be possible. And if there are are drives with same drive letters, they have a different...volume label or such, I have forgotten, for unique identification.
So only lists / efu files made of the same drive can cause duplicate full paths?
Re: What is the best way to just make a list from an entire drive?
Everything will ignored duplicated full paths to ensure full paths are unique for a single indexed file list.
As a file list, as a FAT index, as a folder index and/or as a NTFS index.
You might also have offline volumes sharing the same drive letter, where the drive GUID has changed.
A single drive export will not contain duplicated full paths.
If you are exporting multiple drives, then yes, you might end up with duplicated paths in your EFU file list.
If you index the same drive multiple times by different means, for example:How can path duplicates even arise (unless, of course, you make a list twice from the same drive)?

OK, thank you.
And if you export that single drive twice or more Everything shows the duplicated full paths twice or more.If you are exporting only a single drive from the folder sidebar then, no.
