Parent -> Paste to the basename

Post by therube »

Parent -> Paste to the basename
or
Child -> Paste

How to do it?

how do you do something like:
folder: c:/test/photos/small

such that you can Parent->Paste to /small/ ?

as it is if you search for folder: /test/photos/small/
you can Parent Paste to photos, or to test, or to c:,
but not to the bottom-most (basename), /small/

?

if you're at c:/test/, & (context-menu) Parent Folder -> 'Search in Everything',
you are /shown/ /small/ as a "file/dir" /name/,
but still you cannot select /small/ as a directory to paste to

?

being able to reach /small/,
or more generally subdirectories to the (stem)
[i don't know what a "stem" is, but it sounds right]
<seems #stem: is not right>
[heh, still don't know what #stem: is? who in the world came up with that word ;-)]
would be beneficial, i'd think

what i would like to do, i'm thinking,
is to cut a selection of files, from 1 window, & paste them somewhere else,
up to & including the bottom-most directory is a tree,
in a separate window that is filtered as folder:,
that i would add enough of a search to, to point out my wanted paste location
& as is, that is fine - except for the bottom-most directory

(i can get around that, by excluding folder:,
AND assuming the particular bottom-most directory is NOT empty,
but that muddies up the results in that window,
& instead of picking a directory location as my paste to spot,
i have to pick a /file/ in the wanted directory location, as my paste to spot

IOW, I guess some sort of Child Folder -> Paste functionality.

I presume after copying you are meant right-click an item, on the menu choose the parent folder (or deeper), and choose paste.

However I get an error when I do that.

A folder menu has been suggested.

A folder menu that shows all the subfolders and files as submenus is on my TODO list.
Sort of like the old school windows start menu.

I fear this menu might be too large and unmanageable.

folder: c:/test/photos/small

From your example, you should be able to access the context menu for 'c:/test/photos/small' by right clicking any result and using the Parent Folder menu.

It might be the new layout in 1310a causing confusion?

What is the error message?

If folder: is used (also in the case of an empty directory), you cannot Paste to the bottom-most (basename) directory - /small/.
.
(right-click, View, to see larger)
.
.
Everything - small - if there is a FILE then i can paste.png

If there is a file within /small/, then you can use that file as the basis to initiate your Paste (& with that, you can paste to /small/.)

So /small/ is the Parent of "null".

just when i was getting comfortable with 1310 ;-)

(quick look...)

"Parent Folder" in the expansion is "wordy".

"Open" seems odd. Oddly placed. And somehow appears to be "associated" to the directories shown below it (though isn't).
Maybe if Open could be below the list of directories, with a separator above the word, Open?

My first (imaginary) Paste would have ended up at the wrong place ;-).
(Going to have to play with it & see how it works out in practice...)

I get the following error when copying a jpg and using the Paste on a folder on the menu on another file. It's not the latest alpha however -

The Copy, would be a right-click (context-menu or Ctrl+C, even from outside of Everything) 'Copy' function.
And the Paste, would be context-menu, through the (Everything) 'Parent Folder' path there.

Thank you for your feedback therube,

If folder: is used (also in the case of an empty directory), you cannot Paste to the bottom-most (basename) directory - /small/.
Am I missing something here, if you right click small, can't you click paste in the main context menu?

"Parent Folder" in the expansion is "wordy".
I am exploring ways to make this shorter.
There's too much "Parent Folder" text in the second context menu.

"Open" seems odd. Oddly placed. And somehow appears to be "associated" to the directories shown below it (though isn't).
I'll look into adding a menu separate here.

Thanks for the suggestions.

No, you're not missing anything.

LOL, captain obvious.
Yep, you said that & I started laughing.

This whole time, I'm fixated on 'Parent Folder' & forgot the obvious ;-).
