1309: Parent Folder shows, literally, Parent Folder

Post by therube »

1309: Parent Folder shows, literally, "Parent Folder".

(context-menu) Parent folder (tree directory names) display (literally), "Parent Folder"

Parent Folder -> Parent Folder -> Parent Folder -> Parent Folder
vs.
PS -> TMP -> COLD -> C:

Aye. I think it looks a bit silly too. Suggest deleting the "Parent Folder" sub-menus and turn the "%<folder_name>%" disabled menu item into working sub-menus instead.

Thank you for the feedback.

The Folder Name is now display at the top of the popup menus (since 1307).

Everything 1.5.0.1310a will now show Parent Folder -> System32 -> Windows -> C:

Does this help? Do you find the cascading popup menus difficult to use for deep folders?

Added a Search Everything menu item.

Will have to see how the horizontal layout pans out.

One thing I'll note, is that with < 1309, the initial context-menu showed the directory name, OLD (or BRU), & that aided you in knowing that you had the correct directory selected prior to expanding "Parent Folder".

(When multiple [potential] destination locations were selected, "Parent Folders" (plural) was always displayed.)

1. 1294
2. 1309
3. 1310

(i've not had the opportunity to use this enough [since 1310], but i will..., so more of a ramble at this point...
& that said, I think I realized, that the displayed directory name where the Paste is issued, is where the file will be dropped.
i think.
& IF that is the case, except for the 1 extra expansion, then once i get it through my head, this way will actually be more straight forward.)

-------

1310

change to Parent -> Paste, has me scratching my head

prior: OLD would show in context-menu, Parent-Paste & done

1310: Parent Paste->OLD, & then what ?
- thinking i now have to actually expand OLD, then paste, is that it?
no.
i had to go to the 3rd expansion before i got it right.

seems to me, with this there is going to be an extra expansion needed - always
as in, at least two

oh wait, i'm still not right...
- even better, i did the wrong file!
straightened that out...

right file...
- still wrong, heh
- wrong again
(let me make sure i'm not UNIQ, nope, just wrong)
(eh, it [now] took me about 10 tries, between the wrong file, multiple times,
& not quite understanding where my file will end up... - but NOW, it's in the
right directory ;-))
let me try the next file... (i /think/ i know what to do - now!?)
did i get it? yes. first try - first guess, actually.
this change, so far, is throwing me for a loop.
(these particular steps, has always had me questioning, but at least before,
i did know i was getting it correct & didn't have to think - too much.
now... i've definitely got to pause... & think... & hope.)
let me see if i come across some more...

(i've got to run through some more scenarios...)

(as far as stepped vs. horizontal dialog, not sure that is going to matter)
change that
thinking, for me, stepped makes things more apparent
(maybe if i also hadn't run into this extra expansion... ?)

Added a Search Everything menu item.
1310

Parent Folder -> Search in Everything
(whatever it does, haven't tried it yet)
is "wordy", is the longest string there (save any long directory name),
thereby increasing the width of every expansion
thereby more likely to cause a wrap-back on a long directory structure

(looking quickly) Search in Everything
opens its' search in the current window
which then blows away the existing search
- not something then i would typically use, i don't think?
(thinking i'm simply going to find that confusing altogether?)
(i'd likely ignore that Search in Everything)

I believe I'm coming around on this, & the above is correct. Once I get some more time with it, I believe it should be OK.

Thank you for your feedback therube,

I personally prefer the old layout (1. 1294)
It's nice to know the parent name without having to open the context menu.
The popup menu should belong to the parent menu item.

I would like to show Search in Everything, only when Tools -> Options -> General -> Show folder context menu is checked.

You can hold down Ctrl to open the search in a new window.

I am making some experimental changes for the next alpha update.

Everything 1.5.0.1311a makes some changes to the Parent Folder menu item.

I am experimenting with the old style again, that is Parent Folder (<parent-folder-name>) -> (commands to run on <parent-folder>)

I am aware the context menu item text is getting rather long.
The text should be clear what the context menu contains or what the action does.

I did experiment with showing a folder icon and just using the folder name.
However, I kept expect this to behave like the old school start menu, showing subfolders and subfiles.
I am considering a folder icon with an up arrow.

All parent folders are now shown under the first parent folder context menu to avoid nested context menu hell.

The full path for each parent folder action is now shown in the status bar.

(I've not looked at 1311, yet...)

But I will say, that will deeper directory structures, & now having a better understanding of what is going on in 1310 [& how it "differs" from 1309], 1310's UI is more appealing - for that.

With a few minutes under my belt, it looks like 1311's layout should be OK.

Everything 1.5.0.1312a makes some changes to Parent Folders.

I have removed the Parent Folder text.
I have added a folder icon for parent folders.
I have added a menu separator above the first parent folder name.

Horizontal layout is fine.
Having the directory name (rather then "Parent Folder") is fine.

The only benefit I see to having the initial "Parent Folder" (rather then the directory name) is with that, all actions related to a particular directory are displayed directly underneath said directory name (rather then being offset by 1, if you will).

That makes it easier (for me) to associate what goes with what.
