Window Title Format suggestion

Post by defza »

Nice.

So many times the Filter is on something I don't expect, and then I don't find the thing I'm looking for. So I'm looking for a way to make it clear that this isn't "Everything", but rather just "Documents".

1. I would like to show what my current Filter (Everything, Documents, Music etc) is in the title.. so a variable mapping to the current Filter name perhaps?

2. I would prefer if there was some colour I could change to make me realise that I'm not searching all, but rather a subset.
e.g. maybe the filter dropdown can have different colours for different filters? Or some part of the GUI, maybe the taskbar, or the clear search button could change colour? It just feels that there isn't anything near my search input that tells me that there's a massive filter excluding things.

Oh, I see there's a way to set the global colour of the Filter Bar (dropdown), I wonder if you could add "Item states" to the Filter Bar for each of the filters (document, music, etc), so that I can set the colours there at least :)
Also, I notice the colour I give to the Filter Bar currently only shows when I hover of it, which is not expected, I thought it would be coloured always.

Oh thanks NotNull.
That taught me two new things:
A.
Please consider changing your Home filter:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the Home tab on the left.
  • Change Filter to Everything.
  • Click OK.
This will default your new search windows to use the Everything filter.
This is great. Actually, like a browser, maybe having a key press like Ctrl-Shift-N, could open a new blank search window, meaning, with everything to default? DUnno if that would make sense. Maybe a new option that I can map to that key, e.g. File - New search window (all defaults).

B. Moving the Filter to the left is great, I didn't know that was possible:

Otherwise, the colour item states on the filter bar wouldn't be too hard it seems to add, and quite useful. And the hover colour versus permanent colour would also be handy to fix.

'CTRL + N' will do that out-of-the-box.
If you would like to use a different keyboard shortcut:
  • Go to Menu:Tools > Options > General > Keyboard
  • Select File | New Search Window from the list (its the first one)
  • Press the Add button
  • Add your global shortcut
  • Press OK (twice)
  • Done!
FYI: there is also 'CTRL + HOME' to "reset" the current Everything windoe to the Home-settings.
Of course you can define your own keyboard shortcut here too:
Type "home" (without the "") in the Show commands containing: field to find History | Home

Can't help you here as I'm not the developer of Everything(that is @void). Can only make suggestions based on the current version.

But .. it was suggested a couple of times and is already on @void's to-do list.
The (partial) to-do list is quite long, so keep your fingers crossed, but don't hold your breath ;)

Well I learnt I can move the filter over to the left there - that's extremely helpful as it places it in view as you type! I think that would be better as the default position :)

Ctrl-N copies over the last used filter.
It’s got to do with the settings about what to use when opening a new window, it’s got lots of settings that can be tweaked and defaults changed. That’s all there.
That’s why I was thinking a ctrl-shift-n would maybe open one with everything clean.

Yes, the filter in the left by default would be lovely, and those who don’t want it can move it to the right or off.

What filter did you configure under Menu:Tools > Options > General > Home?
