Use drive name for offline volume instead of drive letter?

Post by cabbage »

Is there a way to make Everything use the name I've given to an offline volume and only that, instead of drive letters? I'm not getting how it's possible to use offline volumes at all without this capability, because the drive letters are being assigned randomly and changing everytime you attach a drive. So there's no way to know which drive is which (if their contents are similar) and you end up multiple drives having the same letter.

For example if I have da rive I named Photos and attach it to a USB port my computer might call it Photos (E:) and Everything calls it just E: but the next time I attach it *to the same USB port* the computer calls it Photos (G:) and Everything thinks it's a new drive called G: Then I attach another drive called Work to that *same port* and now Everything might add it with the name E: So now you see three drives:

E:
E:
G:

where:

E #1 is photos
E #2 is work
G is the same photos drive as E

This is difficult to do in Everything 1.4.

Consider reassigning drive letters so they are unique for each physical device.

Consider using file lists.
Include the volume label in the file list filename.
Add the file lists to your index under Tools -> Options -> File Lists.
Show the file list filename column to view the label.

There's a few things in development that may help:
Everything 1.5 has a folder sidebar that can show volume labels.
Everything 1.5 has a index volume label column.

OK thanks. If the letters stay permanently with the respective external drives I assign them to (which is beyond my level of understanding of how Windows identifies and manages drives), this should be okay. Will look into 1.5 Alpha.
