Everything forgets added folder on reboot

Post by kas »

I can successfully add the root directory of my NAS to "Folders" and Everything will index and search it correctly, but on re-boot, the added location is no longer available, and is not to be found in "Folders".
Everything Search Version 1.4.0.713b (x64) is installed in C:\Program Files, with the index in the recommended user location, (although I have also tried having it in the Program location). I have tried entering the NAS location as Mapped Drive, \\(nework name), and (fixed) IP address, but either way the folder is forgotten on reboot. I've tried starting Everything with Windows, and starting manually, and I've tried running as admin, but nothing I've yet tried will make the new location stick over a re-boot.

Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong, or other things to try...?

A client of mine is also experiencing this issue. I haven't isolated it to a reboot however, as their on-site PC is rarely if ever turned off.
It seemingly randomly drops all the indexes, forcing the user to recompile, which can take an hour or more.
If anyone has any insight I'd also be very interested to hear it.

You also want to index the root of your NAS and you are STILL using Everything Search Version 1.4.0.713b (x64) for that ?!?!
Please be a little more specific about your situation...

How is it installed, where is/are your INI('s), do you run as administrator? What OS does your NAS have? How do you reproduce the issue? etc,etc ...

Does Everything forget other settings after rebooting?

The list of folder indexes are stored in your Everything.ini.
This file is usually store in %APPDATA%\Everything
(or in the same location as your Everything.exe if you have disabled "Store settings and data in %APPDATA%")

Everything 1.4.1 or later will complain if it is unable to save to these locations.
Please check if any third party software might be clearing your appdata or Everything.ini.

If the Everything.ini is read-only no settings will be saved. Please make sure your Everything.ini is not read-only.

Try quitting the application via "ctrl + q" instead of "alt +F4" or any other system indicated routine.

Careful when resurrecting 5+ year old threads. We're using completely different software today.

Jep, you're right: care should be taken.
My contribution to this is not an answer to a 5+ year old thread but to an actually current problem – at least of mine :)

It's true Everything will lose any new settings changes to the current session if the current session does not close gracefully. When making any settings changes you wish to keep, you should use the /restart or /save-all command in the search bar to assure those settings are flushed to the Everything.ini file.

If Everything is busy when using Alt+F4 or a Windows Explorer initiated quit / Close Window, then Windows may terminate the process ungracefully causing database and settings loss and reversion upon restart.

I would propose that Everything flush its settings to file upon closure of the Options panel.

Everything saves the Everything.ini to disk when you click OK or Apply in the Options window.

Everything also saves the Everything.ini to disk when you close an Everything search window.

Everything also saves the Everything.ini to disk when you exit Everything.

Ctrl + Q will exit Everything.

Everything should be saving your settings to disk on Alt + F4.
This is most likely a system issue with caches not being flushed to disk.

If the issue persists, please send your %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.ini to support@voidtools.com
