ctrl+alt+s no longer brings Everything to front

Post by ardee »

Hi. For years, ctrl+alt+s brought the last-used Everything window to the front, launching it if necessary. Now if another program has the focus and ctrl+alt+s is typed, Everything's taskbar icon just blinks and the program does not come to the front. What did I do wrong here?
Thank you!

What OS & version?

Is the key binding still set up in; Tools | Options | General -> Keyboard?

Did Windows (newly) or some other program take over Ctrl+Alt+S, causing interference?

Might you have Always On Top enabled in Everything, View | On Top?

When it was launched if not running
something has changed in your settings outside of Everything.
Everything can't launch itself if not running using a hotkey defined in Everything.
So you had set a hotkey on a Explorer link or using some other way to launch it.

Window 7 Ultimate (don't ask); all settings in Everything have been reviewed and are correct.

It is possible that the issue is outside of Everything, since the issue is apparently unfamiliar here. I have AutoHotKey set up to invoke Everything when ctrl+alt+s is pressed, though that hasn't changed.

Given the above, do you think the issue is indeed outside of Everything?

Thanks so much!

SOLVED: ctrl+alt+s no longer brings Everything to front

SOLVED!

Thank you for suggesting that the problem was outside of Everything. I had AutoHotKey reload its script and now things work as they always have.

This forum, and all you folks, are so helpful! THANK YOU and have a great holiday.

As an aside, you may be inclined to retire your AutoHotkey script given that Everything has this hotkey evocation feature already built-in.

Thanks raccoon. I did just that. It works, even though the "Ctrl+Alt+S" keystroke name/label does not actually show up in the Options screen for some reason.

Give Everything 1.5 Alpha a spin. It is now better than 1.4 even if not all of 1.5's new features are complete yet. Lots of odd 1.4 bugs have been fixed.

An Everything hotkey can't start anything from Everything if its not already started.
So I think its AHK script is still required as this was part of the original post.

In general, that is true. But there are exceptions for keyboard shortcuts CTRL+ALT+letter and CTRL+SHIFT+letter.
So this case (CTRL+ALT+S) is one of those exceptions. You can:
  • Create a shortcut to Everything on the desktop or in the Start menu.
  • Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties (or press ALT+ENTER instead)
  • Go to the Shortcut tab
  • Press CTRL+ALT+S in the Shortcut key box (lazy mode: just press S)
  • Press the OK button
  • Done
From now on you can press CTRL+ALT+S anywhere to start Everything. It is now handled by Windows itself, instead of AHK or Everything.

Don't forget to 'dismantle' your current Everything and AHK solutions :)

Its clear that Windows shortcuts can do it :)
but the poster already had an AHK script running for this purpose.
Before using QAP I had one such script which contained all sorts of shortcuts.
This is much easier to maintain compared to maintain Windows hotkeys.

Hi, original poster here, with a couple notes:

• I installed 1.5 alpha as suggested. Wow, what an incredible set of new features and improvements! Still learning all its goodies.

• I also have one AHK macro that holds many functions. I'm open to using Windows shortcuts instead/as well. But for now, everything is working well so I'll keep my setup and again say "thank you" to the helpful people here. I've learned a lot and gotten phenomenal advice.
