files properties tab

Post by harryray2 »

A small thing, I have an ADS programme that includes a tab in the properties dialogue box. If I access the file properties from everything the tab doesn't appear.
Not madly important but I'm curious as to why?

Which?

Might it be a 32 vs 64-bit issue?

Permission issue?
-Please make sure Everything is running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.
ADS might only work from the Explorer process.
Does the ADS tab show from Notepad?
  • In Notepad, from the File menu, click Open
  • Change the Filename to *.* and press ENTER
  • Select a file with an alternate data stream.
  • Right click the File and click Properties.
  • Is the ADS tab shown?

I already run as service but I keep settings and data the Everything folder for portability.

Is it this that could be the problem?

Do you mean AlternateStreamOverlay? If so, the AlternateStreams tab will appear in the Properties window only if the file has an alternate data stream(s).

Yes, it does..no problem there. It doesn't appear when I go to properties from the results in Everything.

If in Everything I right-click on a file with ADS, then click Properties, the AlternateStreams tab does appear in the Properties dialog box. I guess you've tried right-clicking on other files that have ADS?

I wonder if it could be caused by trying to access a 32-bit AlternateStreamOverlay.dll from a 64-bit Everything. So how to find out which AlternateStreamOverlay.dll is installed on your system. I just downloaded both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of RegDLLView from Nirsoft - https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/registered_dll_view.html . I ran the 64-bit version and it found many registered DLLs. I clicked on the magnifying glass search icon and typed "alternatestream". It found the AlternateStreamOverlay_64.dll registered. Then I ran the 32-bit version of RegDLLView and repeated the search - it didn't find "alternatestream", which I think means that I didn't install the 32-bit version of the DLL. Anyway you might try the same on your system and see what results you get.

It appears that everything I have is 64 bit...I also tried it on a file I created which I know is 64 bit. Still no joy.

I assume that Everything picks up on both 32 and 64 bit files containing ADS

I guess the topic here is not the bitness of files with ADS, there is no such distinction.
Its about which tools (DLLs) are installed to show the ADS properties.

Solved it...I originally registered the dll with a third party programme. I've now registered it with an elevated command prompt.

Regarding ad shell, I've yet to play with it but am I reading the details on the site correctly, it doesn't search in sub folders?

Horst.epp...I think you're probably right. I'm a bit dubious of virustotal results at the best of times.

Thanks.

Not important, but I've just noticed that the icon overlays are working correctly but don't appear in Everything...

I see the ADS "thumbprint" overlay on files with ADS in Everything. Check the registry key Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers\ and count how many keys are under it. If the AlternateStreamOverlayIcon is 16th or lower in the list, it won't appear.
