Today I experienced Everything hanging.
I confirmed in my Task Manager that it was stuck and hanging immediately after first launch (after uninstalling and installing). A blank screen is displayed with my last known search or file count. I leave my PC alone for more than 10 minutes alone but no. It's still stuck. I uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller and reinstalled it again and I try different settings like enabling or disabling the Everything Service or changing running or not running as Administrator.
I'm running Windows 8.1 on an older PC and I'm using HDD. I also run SFC but nothing abnormal was found. I installed Ava find and I don't have this issue.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Re: Something has changed: Everything now hangs
Please try rebuild your Everything.db:
- Exit Everything (right click the Everything system tray icon and click Exit)
- In Windows Explorer, type in the following address:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Everything - Delete your Everything.db
- Restart Everything
- Does the hang persist?
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab on the left.
- Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything
- Uncheck Run as administrator.
- Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
- Click OK.
- Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
- Restart Everything.

Re: Something has changed: Everything now hangs
Hi. Thanks for the tutorial. Revo Uninstalled already removed these files. I confirmed this.
I did check Everything Service and it was ticked (I didn't know why there's an option for the square and not just tick enabled or disabled?
I examined my WER (Windows Error Reporting) log file for Everything. It listed my [recent] installation of Acronis True Image (backup application) in the Everything log file.
Since the Acronis app was a trial, I uninstalled and rebooted. Now Everything runs like it did before. Problem solved.
It appears for some reason Acronis was interfering with Everything? Perhaps this can be looked into?
Also, what is the difference in enabling Run as administrator? Aside from the UAC notification showing up, over the years I never did seem anything different.

Re: Something has changed: Everything now hangs
I have just checked AcronisTrueImage2021 and Everything 1.4.1.1005.It appears for some reason Acronis was interfering with Everything? Perhaps this can be looked into?
I mounted a backup partition image and Everything indexed this without issue.
Everything versions prior to 1.4.1.1005 have trouble reading the mounted backup image when using the Everything Service. (nothing is indexed, also I couldn't reproduce the hang)
Running previous versions as admin could index the mounted partition image without issue.
What version of Everything did you previously have installed?
Everything requires low level read access to the raw partition to index NTFS volumes. Also, what is the difference in enabling Run as administrator? Aside from the UAC notification showing up, over the years I never did seem anything different.
Low level read access to raw partitions requires administrative privileges.
Running Everything as a standard user is recommended.
If you run Everything as an admin, programs you run from Everything will also launch as an admin.
The Everything Service is only required when running as a standard user.
When running as a standard user, the Everything Service allows the Everything search client to index and monitor your NTFS volumes.
If you find Everything hanging again, please try running Everything in debug mode.
What is shown in the debug console?

Re: Something has changed: Everything now hangs
The first thing I did when Everything repeatedly hung after two different attempts. I uninstalled it. I went directly to your https://www.voidtools.com/Everything-1. ... -Setup.exe link and downloaded the 64 bit installer for 1.4.1.1005. The version made no difference.
I can't comment on why you were not able to replicate the hang.
I'm running Windows 8.1 with the latest updates. I don't see any point in running the debug at this point (I couldn't figure out how to run it before, but I will save the link for future).
I no longer have the hanging issue with Everything since uninstalling Acronis. I have restarted/rebooted my PC about 4 times so far today frequently using Everything and held off on replying to your post to see if the hanging would re-occur, it hasn't.
Thank you for explaining the difference when running as Admin. Since I'm the Admin (of my PC) and nobody else uses it. I prefer to have Admin access to everything, but I don't see any difference whatsoever usage wise. However, I know it can't be related, but in previous versions of Everything, it sometimes wouldn't populate (update) the search when there have been changes. So far, it's working as i haven't changed anything from the default set-up. Perhaps "Everything service" needs to be running 24/7 in the background?

Re: Something has changed: Everything now hangs
I don't see any difference whatsoever usage wise.
The Everything Service will use an additional 1MB of RAM.
There is some overhead when indexing volumes for the first time with the Everything Service. (extra RAM and CPU usage)
Everything 1.4 and earlier was designed to be running 24/7.Perhaps "Everything service" needs to be running 24/7 in the background?
For the best performance I recommend running Everything 1.4 in the background.
Everything 1.5 (in development) is designed to be run at any time.
Re: Something has changed: Everything now hangs
It may not be TI alone, but some (any) combination of programs that together might cause the situation.I have just checked AcronisTrueImage2021 and Everything 1.4.1.1005
Some (ancient) threads (& different OS's) & while it might not be "IrpStackSize" (which applied back then), it could be a similar situation (like with the 10K handle limit) that still does apply today.
