Everything freezes after Toggle Window or Esc

I find this program utterly invaluable, but I have a problem when I use the Toggle Window shortcut or press Escape after completing a search, whereby Everything closes the window, but then will not come back up (e.g. by pressing Toggle Window again or clicking on the tray icon) for around one minute or more. If I do not perform a search and just have a blank window, I can Toggle Window as much as I want with no problem - the window pops back up straight away. Minimizing the window does not cause a problem.

I've tried changing various settings, but nothing seems to solve it.

You are running Everything as administrator (ànd have the Everything service installed)

Run Everything under your login credentials instead:

Menu:Tools > Options > General : Disable Run as administrator

If you start Everything with a shortcut, check if you configured it to run as admin
(or easier: delete the shortcut and create a new one)

System Configuration = msconfig msinfo32?

Everything should be listed twice.
- The Everything Service ("c:\path to\Everything.exe" -svc )
This one is needed to access the part of Windows where the file information is stored that Everything uses.
Regular users don't have access to these parts; the service helps with that.

- "c:\path to\Everything.exe" -startup
That will load the database and starts monitoring for file changes to update the database

Both have different functions and you can leave them both enabled.


I didn't see any clues in the debug log that you posted, but @void - the developer - is the only one who actually understands these logs.
In the meantime, as a test, could you create a new local account (that isn't an admin) on your machine and try with that account? You can use lusrmgr.msc to create that account.
All this is not helping you much in solving your issue, but helps to zoom in.

I dont know when Everything considers you to be an admin, but as far as I know you need to be an elevated admin to access the two hidden files where Windows stores the file information (MFT and USN Journal)

I just tried something and I now think the problem is to do with having an off-line NAS folder indexed under the Indexes>Folders option. This drive is only on-line in the evening for backups. I know Windows gets very upset when it can't find a network location and doesn't time out for a long time - might it be something to do with that? Does Everything try to do something with all the drives and folders before opening the GUI? I have it set to be blank when opening the window so it is not trying to list anything from the off-line folder.

Sounds like it. If the issue persists, please try starting Everything in debug mode.

Yes, Everything will try to update this folder index in the background.
However, this is done in a background thread and should not be causing the UI to freeze.

I have it set to be blank when opening the window so it is not trying to list anything from the off-line folder.

This may help, gathering icons and file information is done in a separate thread and should not freeze the UI.

Please try disabling monitoring for the folder index and see if that helps.

Another option is to try filelists:
Create a file list of your NAS.
Add it to your Everything index.

I've attached the debug output from when the freeze happens to the first post - if you search for the destroy_ui line, the freeze happens around that time.

When I deleted the folder completely from the folder indexing section, that solved the problem. I still get the problem with the monitoring (assuming that is the "attempt to monitor changes" option) turned off - I've always had it set that way, just to re-scan once a week.

I don't have any problems if I just minimize the window. I noted there is a minimize to tray option in the settings.ini which works well and all I really need to be able to do is quickly bring the window up and then get it out of the way (and off the task bar). I could use the Windows key + down arrow shortcut to minimize the window, but it would be much easier if I could use the Toggle Window or Esc keys as this is more intuitive and quicker. Something like a toggle to tray option would be fine.

The freeze is caused when destroying the database query which is waiting for the icon request to timeout.

Enabling hide on close might help:

• In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
  /hide_on_close=1
• If successful, you should see hide_on_close=1 in the statusbar for a few seconds.

Everything will no longer close windows and will instead hide them when you click the close button.
This will prevent the freeze when you close a window.
