ETP Server as Everything Client Service

Hello. I was hoping i could get some help on a small issue i have with the Everything client service.

I have installed Everything on a Windows SBS 2008.

I have created the Windows user (ST\evts) just for this service. It is a non-admin user, to prevent Everything indexing folders which ETP clients should not be able to see.

I have specifically given the user evts all read and write permission to "C:\Program Files\Everything"

I have followed this guide to install the Everything Client service, from an admin account.

Afterwards, in the Windows Services, i have defined that the Everything Client Service should run as the user evts.

I then logged on RDP as the user evts, and configured my index of a network folder (which is a regular folder index, no NTFS indexing.) and configured the ETP server. I then indexed the network folder one time and set up a schedule to index automatically.

It is configued to store settings in the Everything program folder, not "%appdata%\Roaming\Everything"
In "C:\Program Files\Everything" i now have the Everything configuration ini file, and the generated database file.
The folder "%appdata%\Roaming\Everything" is empty, so no other config file interfering.

I then logged off the evts user, and logged back in as admin account. Then i started the Everything client service, which is now running as the evts user.

From an ETP client i am able to connect to the ETP server and can successfully search files, and i am not seeing files which normal users shouldn't be able to see.

Sorry for the lengthy description of my setup, but my problem is that if i am only running the Everything client service, the index never gets updated.
I have to stop the service, log in as the evts user, open everything and update the index manually.
Then i can see the new files from the ETP clients.
But the index never updates if i don't do it manually.

And that makes me wonder if the Client service is programmed to update the index according to the schedule, or if it only is supposed to serve the existing index.

The Everything Client Service should be updating your index.

The Everything Client Service might not have permission to list these folders?

Please try running the client service with debug logging enabled and check the readdirectorychanges status:

Stop the Everything client service.
Open your C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.ini and change the following line:
debug_log=0
to:
debug_log=1
Save changes and restart the Everything client service.
Give the service a minute to start (connect with a client to confirm a successful startup).
Open the %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt (depending on the user the service is running with this file might be in C:\Windows\Temp)
Look for the following line:
ReadDirectoryChangesW <path> <error code>
What is the error code shown?

To disable debug logging (logs can grow very large):

Stop the Everything client service.
Open your C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.ini and change the following line:
debug_log=1
to:
debug_log=0
Save changes and restart the Everything client service.

Thanks for the help.
With the debug log, i think i can see why it doesn't work.

I scheduled it to index at 11:00
and to test i added two other folder indexes, one to map the network folder using UNC path with ip address,
and one using UNC path with hostname

The 2 folder indexes using UNC path succesfully indexed, while the N: drive failed to index.

The N-drive is mapped using group policy, and i suspected it was because it was set as non-persistent, so i tried manually mapping it for the evts using "net use /persistent:yes". But that didn't work.
It seems that if the evts user is only running as a service, and not on a desktop session, then mapped network drives don't exist for that user, even if mapped as persistent.

To test this i tried being logged into an active desktop session as the evts user at the same time the service was scheduled to update the index. But it still said:

So even if logged into a desktop session at the same time, the service still couldn't access the network drive.

The alternative is to set the folder index using the UNC path. But that means that ETP clients would also access them using the UNC path, instead of their mapped network drive, which isn't ideal.

The only reason i've added the folder index as a network drive is so the ETP clients can access it correctly. The actual folder is on the server itself, so technically it could just index it locally and serve the clients that index if it was possible to replace the "D:\DATA\" part with "N:\" in the ETP search results on the clients.

Using the local folder path and substituting on the clients solves the problem since it has no problem indexing local paths (or UNC paths for that matter)
