Apply filter with key from search bar?

Post by burgundy »

I can assign a filter to a shortcut key but it doesn't work unless I move the focus away from the search bar.

I would like to enter a term in the search bar and then use a shortcut key to apply a preset filter. Is this possible?

Yes, I think that's possible.

Filter
Search: dc:today
Keyboard shortcut: ALT+T

Inputline: fenst (Part of a text file created today), then press ...
ALT+T: Filter is applied

It works for me.
BUT,
I've noticed that when the pane of Search History is open (search suggestions), I can't send a shortcut key.

When I use ALT-T in your example, it opens the Tools menu. Have you changed the shortcut keys for the menu?

No, it was just an example…

My menu language is German and I have no problem with this key combination.
Just use another free key combination, e.g. ALT+O.

That is my exact problem.

I use "Search As You Type". I also have some setting (I can't remember which( that moves the focus from the search box to the search results when I press enter.

I key in a search term and then, without pressing enter, I would like to apply a filter. I usually see search suggestions in a drop down.

I don't want to press enter because, if the filter doesn't narrow down the hits sufficiently, then I will key in more search values.

For this reason, I would like Everything to let me apply a filter when the search history is showing.

You could also call the filter, e.g. ALT+O first and then make your search selections.

Personally, I would be annoyed by the window that was folded down with the dropdown arrow,
which hides some of the search results.

One possibility would also be to first set the filter (ALT+O) and then call the "search history management"...
Menu "View" | "Go To" | Show All History

In my case it's not the search results which get hidden as much as the column headings, which I often want to access to change the sort order. (I know there are also shortcut keys for this but I usually forget which key does what.)

Is there an Everything setting which prevents the dropdown box appearing below the search bar as you key in a search terms? If so then I could use your suggestion of "Show All History" when I needed to access a previous search.

Would it be possible to make a change such that the history drop down doesn't overlap the column headings when there's only one history item?

To extend the toolbar height, to prevent a single auto suggestion covering the result list header:
  • In Everything, type in the following and press ENTER:
    /search_history_always_suggest_extend_toolbar=1
To reset the toolbar to the default height:
  • In Everything, type in the following and press ENTER:
    /search_history_always_suggest_extend_toolbar=0

I've fixed an issue with showing search history suggestions above the search box.

If you would like to try this, please try Everything 1.4.1.944:
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /search_history_show_above=1
To reset Everything back to showing the search suggestions below the search box:
  • In Everything, type in the following search and press ENTER:
    /search_history_show_above=0

Thank you. That works well.

I must remember how to change that if I need to in future!

Coming back to the original question, is there a way to apply a filter using shortcut key when the focus is on the search bar?

I don't want to move focus to the results list in order to apply a filter. I don't apply a filter first as the results may be simple enough not to need filtering. I simply want to apply a filter as part of entering search characters.

Poster 'Stamimail' has the same problem:

To set a filter shortcut key:
  • In Everything, from the Search menu, click Organize Filters....
  • Select a filter and click Edit.
  • Click to the right of Keyboard Shortcut and press a new keyboard shortcut.
  • Click OK.
Filter shortcut keys will not work when search suggestions are shown.
This is a bug and will be fixed in a future version of Everything.
