Confused feedback, conflicting exclude / index settings

Post by Oliverh »

Hello!

I'm not here to rant, rather to simply report on something I didn't notice before, and that is quite confusing in my eyes, maybe - just maybe! - something could be done about it.

See the attached image, it's thrown me into a pit of confusion before I understood, a minute later.

I had just plugged to my computer my external hard drive (a good old SATA, into an USB3 rack), and because I was using Everything at that time, I noticed the program stopped responding to search queries until it had finished scanning the contents of that drive. (Searching in Everything would return nothing, all it would do was display the status bar message that it was scanning the newly active D: partition)

... even though I had configured the program to, options quoting, exclude that drive

A minute later I had understood where I was wrong (I'll insist, I'm not blaming the program, it's my fault for not understanding),
- excluding will prevent the program from returning search results for files in the places listed from exclusion.
- But it doesn't prevent the indexation of the contents of that drive, and the construction & updating of an index of the contents of that drive (or else tell me why 30 seconds were spent scanning my USB drive, status bar quoting).

Still, in my eyes, that was confusing.

So - constructive criticism - may I make a suggestion? That if we add an entire drive letter in the Index > Exclude options window, the program prompts us, would we also want to stop indexing / remove that drive from indexation in the Index > NTFS options.
Or at least make the program pop up a dialogue window, if it notices we exclude an entire drive, make it show a dialogue window to tell that the drive is still being indexed, with just an "ok" button to close the dialogue :)

Thanks for the constructive criticism.

I'll consider showing a dialog to prompt the user when adding a volume to the exclude list.

For now, I have made the next major release of Everything to completely ignore volumes when they are on the exclude folder list.
