Please try deleting your Everything.db:
  • Completely exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • In Windows Explorer, navigate to:
    %LOCALAPPDATA%\Everything
  • Delete your Everything.db
  • Restart Everything
  • Does the issue persist?

Please update to the most recent version (currently: 1.4.1.904), which can be found here

If that didn't work either: create a debug log.
Do you see suspicious activity/errors in that log?

BTW: what do yo mean by crash? Does Everything get unresponsive? Does it close itself? What do you see on screen?

uninstalled and reinstalled (newest version 1.4.1.904)
problem persist...
yes, it close itself after typing the second letter, but works when I paste text from folder/document etc.
It´s crazy.. I´m using Everything a lot of years, but I have never had similar troubles...
it started suddenly a day ago

Might be a keyboard error. Is the second charactr you type by any chance a "Q"? (a stuck Ctrl key would cause a Ctrl-Q = exit Everything).

BTW: If you want to test this, you can attach multiple USB-keyboards to one system. Try your "deadly combination" (what did you type?) on the other keyboard

Could you post a screenshot of your Everything homescreen? (before typing those 2 'deadly' keys :))

Keyboard isn´t reason for the crash.
Never mind what I write (any letter or combination of letters), the problem persist :shock:
I send you the screenshot :(

Try opening Everything in Read Only mode & see if you're able to "read" data successfully (assuming you have not yet deleted your .db).

Or try with a new, separate instance of Everything.

I was particularly interested in what was on the statusbar (number of objects + what is shown on the right side). Could you tell me what is on the statusbar? (you can enable it with Menu:View > Statusbar)

This is very weird all in all. I don't have a logical explanation (yet), but this is intriguing enough to get to the bottom of it ....

First step: could you post your (zipped) Everything.ini? It should be located in c:\users\your name\\AppData\Roaming\Everything (about 20kb size)
Furthermore: that debug log could be really useful, but it might contain sensitive data (if you named a file "how to kill my neighbour.doc" it might show up in the log ( but not it's contents)). So check that before posting.

Please try isolating the problem drive:
  • Completely exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • In Windows Explorer, navigate to:
    %LOCALAPPDATA%\Everything
  • Delete your Everything.db
  • Open your %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.ini
  • Change the following line:
    auto_include_fixed_volumes=1
    to:
    auto_include_fixed_volumes=0
  • Delete the following line:
    ntfs_volume_guids="\\\\?\\Volume{01234567-0123-0123-0123-012345678901}",...
    \\\\?\\Volume{01234567-0123-0123-0123-012345678901} might look a bit different for you.
  • Save changes and restart Everything.
  • Does Everything crash with no volumes indexed?
  • Please try enabling one volume at a time and see if Everything is stable:
    • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
    • Click the NTFS tab.
    • Select a volume
    • Check Include in database.
    • Click OK.
Please check your volumes for errors:
  • Please backup anything important on your drive before checking it for errors.
  • In Windows Explorer, right click your drive and click Properties.
  • Click the Tools tab.
  • Click Check now...
  • Click Start
  • If prompted to schedule a scan on the next restart, click Yes.
