On occasion the Escape key does not work to exit Everything.
I am using Everything 1.4.1.877 on WinXP/SP3.
In case there was a conflict occuring, I removed "Ctrl W" from Tools > Options > Keyboard > File|Close. Now there is just "ESC (Global)". I still have the problem.
What else can I do to use the Escape key to exit Everything?

Pressing the Escape key will do the following built-in actions before your custom action is executed (File | Close)
If Everything fails to close after pressing Escape key, does pressing the Escape key again close Everything?
- Cancel the middle mouse button scroll.
- Cancel the Jump to buffer (typing in characters into the result list).
- Cancel mouse capture.
- Clear any files/folders Everything has put on the clipboard.
- Cancel a search.
- Cancel a sort.
- Leave fullscreen mode.

The problem is intermittent. As far as I can remember, none of those operations you mention were pending or had just occurred.
I will look more closely at those possibilities next time it occurs and report back.

I am the original poster. I definitely get problems with the ESC key on WinXP/SP3 being used to exit Everything. I have disabled CTRL-W in Everything.
There are none of the other actions you listed that are pending. I can repeatedly hit the ESC key and nothing happens. I can change where in Everything there is mouse focus (search bar or list of results) but it does not help.
Sometimes as I am hitting the ESC key repeatedly, it will suddenly work (and Everything closes as desired) after what was probably 10 to 20 tries of the ESC key.
Most of the time Everything is okay but perhaps every 20 uses, I get this problem

It is possible after cutting an item in Everything the Esc key will no longer close Everything.
This issue can occur if Everything does not receive notification that the clipboard was emptied.
I've fixed the issue in Everything 892.
However, you may find you need to press Esc twice to close Everything after cutting an item in Everything.
