Mouse and Keyboard Stops Functioning Correctly

I've been having a major problem since installing Everything. It took me a while to figure out that Everything is the cause. Sometimes things are fine for many hours after opening Everything and sometimes only minutes after I first open it, the mouse and keyboard malfunctions.

What happens is if I left-click on a video file, the Properties panel will open. The only way I can open a video is to right-click and use the Context Menu. Opening links don't work either with a left-click.

As for the keyboard, the keys don't work. If I press certain keys, it does weird stuff. For example, if I try to type something into the search box using my browser, it will open something on the toolbar. I can't type anything anywhere including trying to type something using Windows Explorer folder search, Everything, Notepad++, or anything else on my PC that accepts typing.

The only way to get things working normally is to log off or restart the PC. BTW, it does the same thing with other mice and keyboards I tested to make sure it wasn't a mouse or keyboard issue.

Uninstall Everything and see if the problem still exists - if not, download and temporarily use a Everything portable.

This happens when the ALT key is stuck.

Your mouse/keyboard software might be having trouble with Everything running as an administrator.

Please try running Everything as a standard user and installing the Everything service:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the General tab.
• Check Everything Service.
• Click Apply.
• Uncheck Run as admin.
• Click OK.
• Restart Everything.

Well, the same thing just happened again. However, I stumbled across something. As always when the issue happens, I couldn't use my keyboard and opening links by left-clicking won't work with the mouse.

Needing to access this forum to report the results, I decided to use the On Screen Keyboard feature. What happened next surprised me.

After clicking on 1 or 2 keys via the On Screen Keyboard, the keyboard and mouse reverted back to working correctly! Maybe this outcome can lead to remedying the problem.

I would like to know with this new information what could be causing the keyboard and mouse to stop working correctly after using Everything.

Update! It just happened again when I opened Everything. I opened the On Screen Keyboard feature again and noticed this time that I didn't have to click on anything to make the keyboard and mouse function correctly.

Merely opening the On Screen Keyboard feature made the keyboard and mouse function correctly.

Do you have multiple keyboards listed in Control Panel -> Region and Language -> Keyboards and Languages -> Change keyboards ?
Are you launching Everything from a Hotkey?

Please try enabling verbose debug logging.

• Completely exit Everything (right click the Everything system tray icon and click Exit).
• Open your %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.ini
• Change the following lines:
  debug_log=0
  verbose=0
  to:
  debug_log=1
  verbose=1
• Save changes and Restart Everything.

When verbose debug logging is enabled, Everything will log all debug messages, verbose debug messages and events to %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt

Void, I found 3 .ini files but cannot can't find an .ini file with that information or the file path %APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.ini. What should I do?

I even disabled both the Windows hidden files settings-Don't show hidden files... and Hide protected operating....

When I reopened Everything after totally closing it out via the System Tray as per the instructions, it took many tries (about 15 times) before I could open it. It did eventually pop up a message that I had to run it as administrator and again the keyboard and mouse stopped functioning correctly. Of course, I had to use the On Screen Keyboard feature to get it to work again.

When it finally opened, it didn't work. I had to keep closing and reopening it (probably 15 times) before the search process worked.

I checked and don't have more than one keyboard showing. In fact, I don't see the name of my keyboard. My primary keyboard is a Logitech diNovo Edge which is wireless and has a built-in battery. The only time I use a different keyboard is once in a while I need to use a keyboard while I'm charging the diNovo Edge keyboard. As stated earlier, the same issue happens with the standard keyboard. The mouse I'm using is a standard corded mouse. I used to use a wireless Logitech Trackball but lost the ball. I have Logitech Setpoint installed.

Are you launching Everything from a Hotkey?

I launch Everything from what's called the WorkShelf via a program I've used for many years called Winstep Xtreme. http://www.winstep.net/themes.asp

After going to where the Everything.exe is, I still don't see the entries debug_log=0 and verbose=0. I even used Find/Find Next within the ini file and it only came up with debug=0. Nothing at all for Verbose.

I notice that Everything is in both my 32 and 64bit Program Files. However, the 64bit ini doesn't have the same info as the 32bit (x86) location and it reads:

I've been having a major problem since installing Everything.

What version of Everything are you running?

Give 1.4.1 Beta a shot, enabling the debugging.

Suspect the issue is going to involve Winstep.

therube, I'm using Version 1.3.4.686 (x86). I'll go ahead and install 1.4.1 Beta.

You edited something in the ini info I posted. The reason was: "enclosed ini file contents in

 tags." I have no idea what that is. Please explain what this means.  :? 
 
 Oh BTW, I'm going to uninstall the old versions and use the 64bit 1.4.1 Beta. Will not having a 32bit version installed cause a problem?

If the problems persist, please try Everything 837b:

The Message hook in Everything 837b is disabled, which might be causing the issue.

Will not having a 32bit version installed cause a problem?

The 32bit version of Everything should run fine on a x64 OS.

UPDATE: It's been more than two weeks since I installed v1.4.1 Beta 64bit. I can joyfully report that I haven't had any problems so far.

To recap...I had two installations installed at the same time. I don't know if that's what caused the problem. I double-checked and found that I had v1.3.4.686 32 and 64 bit installed so I uninstalled them.

I then installed only v1.4.1 Beta 64bit.
