This file exists on my Win 10 PC:
20170104HorstedKeynes-B-orig2-edit2.gpx
But a search for
*orig2*
did not find it.
Nor does
*edit2.gpx
I rebuilt the database and Everything then finds it.
This issue of the database occasionally somehow not updating itself in the background is worrying. Discovering this particular failure was accidental. But it seems I can never be confident that the result of a search is comprehensive.
Have you made any progress in fixing this please?

Search fails - database not updated
Re: Search fails - database not updated
Are you using the Everything service? Was the service stopped or failed to start?
Renaming hard links is not yet supported.
Is this file a hard link (in Windows Library maybe)?
Everything doesn't support renaming files with the short filename yet.
Was the file changed using the short filename?
Files that were in an excluded folder and moved to a folder that should be included will not be added to the index.
Do you have any exclude filters?
If you can reproduce the issue, please send your verbose debug log.

Are you using the Everything service?
Yes. Its current Status = Running and with Startup type = Automatic.
Was the service stopped or failed to start?
Well, not by me! And if it was stopped, why would the search deliver any results at all?
This is just a plain file, not a' hard link', whatever that is. And why do you mention renaming'? Or short file names?

The file was not in C:\$Recycle.Bin which is my only excluded folder.
Do you have any exclude filters?
No

Obviously I can't do this until after it happens again. But I have sent you a log before about the same sort of problem, in the thread When is index updated?
You haven't answered my question about progress on this intermittent problem, whch - as I said - clearly seems IMO to be unrelated to the factors you've raised but is an indexing problem. IOW, somehow the database is not getting reliably updated.
Is it perhaps only happening under Win 10?
I'd be happy to send more details or screenshots of my settings. For a start, here's the General settings:

Re: Search fails - database not updated
You will be able to continue to search in Everything if the service is stopped.why would the search deliver any results at all?
The Everything service is only used for the initial index and monitoring file systems for changes.
Because Everything can miss changes to both these types of events. The file you mentioned may have been created as 20170104HorstedKeynes-B-orig2-edit2.gpx.tmp and renamed from 201701~1.tmp to 20170104HorstedKeynes-B-orig2-edit2.gpx.And why do you mention renaming'? Or short file names?
It is still an on going issue, more debug logs would help. You haven't answered my question about progress on this intermittent problem, whch - as I said - clearly seems IMO to be unrelated to the factors you've raised but is an indexing problem.
