Delete does not update search results

Post by soaper »

After deleting a file (by hitting the delete button), the search results display does not update. The file continues to be displayed, although in reality it has been sent to the Recycle Bin. Hitting delete again does not do anything (i.e. there is no complaint that the file does not exist).

Is this a symptom of a corruption somewhere? Do I need to regen the index to fix it?

I am running Version 1.4.0.713b (x86) on Windows 7.

Thanks.

Has this always been the case?
Does it happen with all drive (letters)?
Are you using a File List with monitoring disabled?
Or similar with NTFS?
Or have the same drive indexed both as NTFS & File List?

This is new, just started happening.

It used to be that when I hit delete, a confirmation would pop up asking if I really wanted to delete the file. Now there's silence.

By the way, problems start happening after sustained use of ES, so I am not totally surprised. Things start to go down, and then you have to do something to fix them.

Could you suggest a debugging approach I can use?

I did a rebuild and that fixed it. But I would like to see ES get better at robustness. As I said before, functionality degrades over time. I wonder if the system can self-detect that and automatically repair its data structures.

Do you know if this lingering file in Everything was indexed as a NTFS volume?

If it was indexed as a folder index it's quite common for Everything to miss the deletion event.

The file was one of several within a well-known folder that hasn't changed in years. I have only NTFS volumes.

As I mentioned, re-building the index fixed it. But I hope you have taken note of this pattern I mentioned that I have observed before, where functionality degrades over time and then, an index re-build fixes things. (The index re-build is so fast - and therefore so cheap - that it really doesn't pay to debug a problem.)
