Everything Stops&Freezes (forever)

Post by Juicer »

Everything 1.3.4.686 (x64) Windows 7&10
Five disks are in Folder under Indexes. 3 of them are in fact folders of remote network drive.
Settings set to "Never update" those 3 remote drives cause it takes eternity (I update them manually once a month on full moon...)
But Everything is still indexing those folders thus freezes and become unusable:

Same on Windows 7 and 10, regardless if installed locally, run as admin or with service.

Any suggestions?

Do they also show, & are they being indexed from NTFS?

(BTW, I too happen to have a W:, as a Folder, that I've set to never update. And come to speak of it, that also explains why file I know I've "deleted" have persisted in an Everything window I've kept open pending exploration as to why? [Now I can close it :-)])

Nope, Local NTFS volumes have only two local disks C and D on the list.

Still the same, half of the day that thing doesn't work. Because it's indexing drives it never had to.

Any ideas anyone?

Everything 1.3 likes to rescan all volumes (including folder indexes) when it is not possible to update a single NTFS volume with the USN Change Journal.

I recommend trying the Everything 1.4 beta if this rebuilding in Everything 1.3 is an issue for you.
Everything 1.4 should never rescan folder indexes.

Here are few things you can try that may help reduce the number of times Everything 1.3 rescans all volumes:
  • Please make sure "Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything" is enabled from Tools -> Options -> General.
  • Please make sure "Auto include fixed NTFS volume" and "Auto include removable NTFS volumes" are disabled in Tools -> Options -> NTFS.
  • Please try increasing the USN Journal size for each NTFS volume:
    • For each NTFS volume listed in Tools -> Options -> NTFS
      • Change the Maximum size to 65536 KB.
    • Click OK (this will unfortunately, rebuild the entire index, but may help reduce future rebuilding if your USN Journals are filling up)
During a rebuild, performing another action on the database will cause Everything to become unresponsive, Everything should recover after a few minutes.
