Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb drive
Hello, i dunno if it's when pluging or unpluging my passport usb drive but when i open an everything window after that, it'll show 0, just like if you press ESC while it's analysing drives.. Hope i'm being clear? I use last x64 (on accurate 7 of course) version, i always had this issue AFAIR.
PS: Had an account here but couldn't find the ID back so i made this new one. Admin/mods,please pm me the user name so i can see my old messages..

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Ok thanks for the info but if i said pm that's cause i don't really need everyone to know all my nicks.. Now i understand you probably answered here cause you couldn't pm me. You can proceed deletion of the related information (or message), thanks.
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Now i know exactly : the issue happens when i unplug an usb hard drive. No ideas?
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
What version of Everything?
What specific settings do you have set for that drive?
(Options | Indexes -> NTFS)

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
As 1st post stated, i use the lastest x64 version, which is 1.3.4.686 (x64) // In the NTFS section, everything is checked up except "USN Journal"
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Hi,
Some time ago, I opened a thread explaining I have the same problem. When I plug or unplug a USB hard drive, Everything sometimes crashes or doesn't update the list of files. Definitely, plugging and unplugging portable hard drives is a bit tricky and what I often do is close Everything before I plug or unplug a new drive.

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
If that's the only solution, maybe there's a way to make a script on your desktop so that it kills & restart the apps with just a double clic? Otherwise i thought maybe the x86 version would work better (x64 versions often have troubles..) but i didn't try -yet-; did you? Waiting for dev words..
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Hi, goji,
I forgot to say that I'm using the 64-bit portable version. It shouldn't make any difference whether it's the portable version or the normal one, but I wonder if the problem has to do with that.
You said that sometimes making a programme 64-bit can cause problems, so I'm going to give the 32-bit portable version a try: I'll write again about my experience in a few days.
Regards!

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
I forgot: I've run Everything as Administrator and I've also used the Everything service, with similar results.
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
"therube" : No suggestions for us..?
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Do you use "Safely Remove" on the drive?
Anything odd with the way that the drive is mounted? No special driver or anything like that running for it? An automated synchronization script?
Anything here, http://www.voidtools.com/support/everyt ... _shooting/ ?

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Hello, therube,
Thank you for your message!
Yes: I use "safely remove" on my drives (I suppose you refer to the tool on the Windows taskbar). In fact, sometimes I can't safely remove my drive unless I close Everything.
As far as I know, no odd ways to mount my drive or special drivers or scripts.
I've been using Everything x86 portable for a few days already and everything seems to be working fine, thought it's too soon tell.

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
My drives are Western Digital Passport, they have encryption, though when they're removed, i do not see any differences with other drives..?

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Hi,
After a few weeks using Everything in its 32-bit version, things are working fine, so maybe there's a problem with the 64-bit version.
I hope this can be dealt with in future updates.

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Sorry but that's wrong, i also installed the x86 version and still have the same issue. I can't believe we get no more replies from devs..!!
PS: A keyboard shortcut/menu entry should be created to "reload database" as a workaround for the issue, while waiting for a definitive fix.

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Could you please send some debug output?
After the issue has occurred, what is displayed in the debug console?

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Hello, i'm coming for news!
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Thanks, but why don't you had this option in the GUI settings window..?! What about your idea of make the offline files appear greyed?
Are you going to update with all that (and more, for example an import/export settings feature) soon? Hope so ^^
EDIT! Problem, the ini files keeps reseting itself! I closed the app before editing, yet it reset after a while..

Are you sure you fully exited Everything?
(Check Task Manager & verify that Everything is not running as an Application.)
[Don't know if the Everything.exe Process also needs to be stopped, but I would think not?]

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Man, i'm 200% sure since i did it many times! Just did it again now and i confirm, once everything is started again, after 2-3sec, ini is reset. BTW respond others questions too please ^^
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
It was a last minute experimental option for Everything 1.3.but why don't you had this option in the GUI settings window..?!
It will be enabled by default in Everything 1.4 with more control in the UI.
I like this idea, but maintaining what is online and what is offline is not practical at this stage. What about your idea of make the offline files appear greyed?

Please make sure Everything is not running when you modify the Everything.ini.The ini files keeps reseting itself!
Please make sure "Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything" is enabled from Tools -> Options -> General.
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
As i told you, i did this way, and i tried many times. The option is set as you said. Just for you i tried again on another computer this time. Once again after restarted and after i type anything in search box, ini will reset!!
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Out of words? If it doesn't work for me, it should for you either, if we use same version. I saw in the tweak thread other people had ini reset issue, i assume it's everyone.
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Are you running different versions of Everything?
Running an older version may reset some ini settings for Everything 1.3.4.686.

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Not at all, i have only one installed and for +1year..
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Is it just one setting, or all settings?
Do you run Everything with different user accounts?
Do you sometimes run Everything without administrative privileges?

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Sorry..? Are you talking about the ini? It's just reset.. I don't recall running everything with another account; what do you mean by "without administrative privileges"? All my accounts are set as admin.
Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Yes, sorry I was talking about the ini.
I thought running Everything across multiple user accounts might cause this issue, but I am unable to reproduce the issue you described.
Do you have any Everything.ini.tmp files?
Is your hard drive full?
Do you have any errors reported in your %APPDATA%\Everything\Errorlog.txt file?

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Everything.ini.tmp i had that when i tried to put the ini in read only mode to fix the reset issue (so it failed).
"db_volume_open_syncronous(): failed to open volume" i have these in error log. Drive ins't full!

Re: Everything stops working when plugin/unplugin some usb d
Ok i found out what's happening.. Strange you didn't mention! Actually ini doesn't reset, "keep_missing_indexes=1" is just moved to another place (it doesn't stay in the end). So strange you didn't mention that, how couldn't you notice? Anyway it's all fine now i guess.. Hope update will be there soon ^^
