Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file

Post by emmacos »

EVERYTHING was working fine and then one day it stopped allowing me access to the files that it has found. Try to do anything with the files and suddenly I am getting an error message:

C:\Windows\explorer.exe
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

I have looked at the permissions of the individual files and can only conclude that the problem lies with EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING seams to be finding everything OK but I cannot do anything with the files that it finds. Can't move them, open them or even explore the directory where they are located.

EVERYTHING worked fine one day and then the next day the explorer.exe error.

Version 1.3.4.686 (x64)

I can use the windows 7 file system to manipulate the files that EVERYTHING has told me I do not have rights to. I just cannot use EVERYTHING to manipulate these files.

TIA

Are you running the Everything Service?
(Options | General -> Everything Service)

Or are you running Everything "as Administrator"?

Or might you be running Everything as a "Limited" user?
(Can you do something like that?)

Perhaps a malware scan?
Malwarebytes, free version is fine.

yes running as administrator (checked in check box). Even restated the exe by right clicking and saying run as administrator.

Like I said, even though EVERYTHING says "You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item", I can access the item with no problem using the windows explorer.

And the Malwarebytes shows no problems.

Tried to check the box for Everything Service to see what that would do and got the error:

Everything
Unable to create the Everything service: 5

Unchecked Administrator and restarted but same problem

---------------------------

OK - I went back to version Everything-1.2.1.371 and everything seems to be working.

I previously uninstalled Version 1.3.4.686 (x64) and then reinstalled Version 1.3.4.686 (x64) but the problem persisted. Now I install 1.2.1.371, which I believe is a 32 bit, and it is working.

I will NOT say the problem is fixed because I cannot use the latest and greatest BUT...
